Street Tree Supervisor
Location: Santa Barbara, CA
Salary: $70,837-$86,102 Annually
THE POSITION Under direction, supervises Forestry crews performing tree maintenance including
pruning, removal, tree planting, watering, pest management and tree preservation activities.
Inspects trees located throughout the City including Parks and Facilities, enforces City tree
ordinances, provides information and assistance to other City Departments and staff, organizes,
monitors, and evaluates crew and contractor service activities; answers questions from the public
and staff; investigates complaints; provides exemplary customer service to all individuals by
demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous and
respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
Note: this is an unclassified, at-will supervisory position. Interviews for this position are
tentatively scheduled for early January, 2020.
Education/Experience: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the
required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge
and abilities would be four years of increasingly responsible experience in arboricultural
maintenance, including one year of administrative and supervisory responsibility; and/or training
and education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized course work in tree maintenance or a related field.
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of tree pruning/trimming, tree maintenance methods
and equipment to effectively maintain trees, rigging methods and use and maintenance of tools and
safety precautions concerning tree services activities; arboriculture, nursery practices, tree
cultivation, soils, fertilizer, integrated pest management practices; local trees,
characteristic and hazards; forestry policies and procedures, tree inventory and maintenance
operations, principles of supervision related to hiring, training, evaluation and discipline; and
safety.
Skill in: Pest control management- Identifying insects and diseases that infect trees and plants in
the Santa Barbara region and the actions necessary to correct problems; local, state and federal
law and regulation; assist with budget , report writing and computer use (Word and Excel).
Ability to: Supervise, train, evaluate, and discipline several mobile crews; direct, organize, and
plan the work of Forestry crew. Interpret, explain and enforce policies and procedures;
diagnose and analyze tree problems and determine remedies; effectively and tactfully respond to
requests and inquiries from the public; identify common tree species; prepare and maintain
accurate and detailed reports and records; work independently; understand and follow oral
and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
establish and maintain effective working relationships; perform computer functions competently.
Analyze questions and resolve complaints; coordinate activities with other departments and
divisions; evaluate material and equipment requirements for crews.
License Requirements: Applicant must possess a valid California Driver's License at time
of appointment, and obtain a class B license within six (6) months of appointment. Possess and
maintain Arborist certification by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). ISA Municipal
Specialist certification, and/or ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification highly desirable.
