Operator 1- Arborist

Location: Stony Plain, AB, Canada
Salary: $28.99-$31.68 Hourly

The Town of Stony Plain currently has a full time, permanent position available for an Operator I – Arborist. Under the general direction of the Horticulture Foreman, this position will be responsible for tree pruning, removal, and inspection services, as well as planting and maintaining of all town trees and shrubs. This position will also assist other divisions as required.
The ideal candidate for this position should have a Post Secondary certificate or diploma in Arboriculture or related field, plus a minimum of 2 years related field experience, referably in a municipal setting. ISA certification is an asset. An Alberta Environment Pesticide Applicator License is also considered an asset. Your strong horticultural knowledge, as well as an excellent understanding of pruning and removal of trees will help to ensure your success in this role.
Other relevant skills include a working knowledge of the Alberta Weed Control Act, an Alberta Class 3 license with Q endorsement, and a strong mechanical aptitude. The successful candidate must be willing to work weekend and evening overtime shifts as occasionally required and participate in the standby schedule on a rotational basis. In accordance with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 955 Collective Agreement, this position is based on a 40 hour work week and offers an hourly wage rate of $28.99 - $31.68

Position Summary: The Operator I - Arborist, under the direction of the Foreman Horticulture, is responsible for providing tree pruning, removal, and inspection services
as well as planting and maintaining of all town trees and shrubs. This position will also assist other divisions and/or perform other duties as required.

Core Duties:

  • Inspections of trees on residential and town properties.
  • Climbing, pruning and removal of trees, as well as tree bracing and cabling.
  • Planting trees, including fertilizing and mulching.
  • Safe work practices and use of wood chippers, stump grinders, chainsaws, and hand tools.
  • Assists in the procurement for plant materials.
  • Coordinate insect, weed and other pest control measures.
  • Performs and supports horticultural practices that encourage overall plant health and soil nutrition and integrated pest management practices.
  • Investigate complaints and reporting of actions taken.
  • Maintain accurate records of resources utilized for and incorporated into activities.
  • Ensure that knowledge remains current through an awareness of new products and technologies within the Arboriculture and Horticulture fields
  • Participate in job site safety meetings.
  • Assist other divisions with the maintenance of utilities, roads, projects/special events, sports fields/arena and shop as required.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation.
  • Available to work shift work and overtime including weekends and/or statutory holidays as required.

Specialized Skills/Knowledge:

  • Pruning and removal of trees.
  • Knowledge of native and introduced tree species.
  • Knowledge of compartmentalization, plant health care, and tree wounding.
  • Good landscape maintenance and construction skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills.
  • Exceptional knowledge of the Alberta Weed Control Act and associated regulations.
  • Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) training.
  • Class 3 license with Q endorsement.
  • Operate light to heavy construction equipment operation.
  • Strong Mechanical Aptitude.
  • Chainsaw safety and operation.
  • Fall protection.
  • Physical ability to use hand tools, lift heavy objects (over 25lbs), work in awkward positions, stand and walk throughout the day and work in inclement weather.
  • First Aid Certificate

Education:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Postsecondary certificate or diploma in Arboriculture or related field.
  • ISA certification considered an asset.
  • Alberta Environment Pesticide Applicator License (considered an asset)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of practical field experience in arboriculture, horticulture and landscape maintenance and construction, preferably in a municipal government
    setting
