Directs and participates in a broad range of arboricultural practices, with an emphasis on pruning, removal, planting, watering and visual inspection of trees. Work activities conducted from the ground and at various heights, using mechanical lifts and rope-based climbing. Performs, directs and trains staff in the completion of challenging tree maintenance and removal duties.
Assists the team’s Lead Arborist in developing objectives and work plans for Urban Forestry Operations.
Oversees the teams planting, establishment and watering programs which supports our commitment to creating a sustainable Urban Forest.
Participates in the hiring process’ for new full time and seasonal staff.
Oversees the preventative maintenance of all equipment assigned to crews to ensure that heavy equipment, power and hand tools, and climbing gear are safe and in operable condition.
Trains employees in equipment use and care; proper and safe techniques of arboriculture work such as pruning, removals climbing, planting and transplanting, and stump grinding; Also trains employees in tree identification, general plant healthcare, and basic tree risk assessment.
Assists the City's Lead Arborist in conducting aerial rescue training for Urban Forestry field staff.
Conducts tree inspections in response to citizen or department requests.
Plans, researches, and purchases equipment and supplies as needed for department.
Ensures that crew members maintain accurate work and equipment records and take part in all required safety trainings. Generates and closes out work orders for all field crew activities using GIS software; updates tree inventory.
Researches a variety of specialized databases and records; interprets records and plans; prepares correspondence, records, reports, drawings and other program documentation.
Maintains accurate records; compiles and provides information on processes and policies in the program area.
Uses specialized tools and electronic devices to perform technical tasks; operates and maintains specialized database programs as required; makes corrections to records; monitors processes and systems.
Provides detailed and specialized information to contractors and the public about Urban Forestry’s maintenance program and its policies, including potential enforcements.
May assist with investigating complaints regarding violations of codes and regulations.
Participates in the collection, reporting, analysis and maintenance of field data and provides training and lead direction to temporary staff assisting in data collection activities.
May work independently or in a crew situation. Assists with monitoring budget and expenses.
Applies safe work processes and ensures the safety of the public and employees. Operation of frontend loaders and 5 and 10 yard dump trucks.

Experience:
Four years of increasingly responsible experience in arboriculture, forestry, or natural area maintenance which includes experience in climbing and/or use of aerial lifts, chainsaw and chipper operation.
License or Certificate:
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), Certified Arborist certification.
A valid Oregon driver's license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).
Requires a valid Oregon Class A Oregon Commercial Class A driver's license required within one year of date of employment.
ISA Tree Risk Assessment (TRAQ) qualification required within one year of date of employment. ODOT Flagger certification required within one year of date of employment.

Manages challenging conversations with the public around how our program cares for the Urban Forest. Plan and coordinate program activities.
