Sunday - Friday 10:30PM – 7:00AM and will need to be available to direct activities as required for night and weekend campus events and emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays

 

Job Description

Facilities Management, Grounds Services, Tempe campus, seeks a nights Grounds Supervisor to manage general grounds services activities, with specific proficiency in hardscape maintenance and solid waste.

 

Essential Duties

Supervise the activities of subordinates pertaining to daily maintenance of high-use, high-profile public sidewalks and malls of varying finishes, outdoor fixtures and furnishings, bulky material removal, compactor maintenance, and general grounds maintenance . Oversee power washing, street and sidewalk sweeping, outdoor furnishings placement and maintenance, bulky and solid waste material removals, compactor repairs and maintenance, solid waste schedules, and other grounds maintenance tasks.  Ensure customer service goals are met.  Respond to emergencies in outdoor areas, including water removal, branch removal, and debris removal. Plan and assign tasks, projects, priorities and develop work schedules and equipment usage priority for Grounds projects. Review designs and plans, monitor ongoing construction, and perform pre- and post-project walk-throughs. Recommend and implement methods and procedures designed to increase overall effectiveness of the grounds operation. Evaluate operations and assigned facilities and develop recommendations for energy savings, safety improvements, and sustainable landscape techniques.  Compile information for budgets, estimates and special projects. Develop budgets for equipment and programs.  Monitor the expenditure of funds for facilities equipment and service to ensure control of activities required to maintain operating within limits or approved budget. Apply grounds management techniques, implement and maintain a sound safety program and instruct personnel in following appropriate safety standards and procedures. Analyze manpower requirements and issue specific assignments ensuring the most effective utilization of personnel and equipment. Inspect both finished projects as well as work in progress.  Provide measures to ensure satisfactory performance, meeting established standards of hardscape maintenance, solid waste removal, plant inspection, irrigation systems, trees and shrubs.   Take necessary measures for eradication for insects, pests or disease. Maintain up-to-date information on developments in solid waste, hardscape maintenance, soils, plants, irrigation systems, insect control, and herbicides.  Prepare records and files and submit reports as required. Respond to tree-related hazards, emergencies and storm events, some of which may occur outside a normal work schedule. Oversee the work of outside contractors and vendors for repairs and services. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of grounds maintenance work experience which includes two years of supervisory experience; OR, Associate’s degree in Horticulture or related field AND four years of grounds maintenance experience including two years of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.  Technical training and/or professional certifications in landscape, horticulture, pest management, arboriculture and irrigation may be required for some incumbents and/or positions.

  • Experience managing the daily and seasonal maintenance of high-profile, high-usage public walkways with varying finishes
  • Experience managing solid waste hauling
  • Experience managing the placement and maintenance of outdoor furnishings
  • Experience in waste diversion efforts
  • Experience managing crews of 15+ people
  • Experience in emergency response efforts
  • Experience in planting and/or caring for shrubs, flowers, plants and/or trees
  • Experience in design and/or redesign of landscapes
  • Experience in customer service
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of horticulture
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel)
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills

 

Working Environment

Activities also require standing for varying lengths of time and walking distances outdoors to perform work which requires frequent bending, stooping, reaching, climbing ladders, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 lbs. and working outside in extreme temperatures and in dirty outdoor environment. May be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment. Some activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Drive/operate University cart/vehicle/equipment.

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.  A Department of Motor Vehicle search will be conducted.  Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

This position may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Must pass a pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment.
