Irrigation Assistant

Position Summary:

Assist in the installation of irrigation systems at the direction of the Irrigation Manager. This hands-on irrigation technician position is a perfect fit for the irrigation tech that is seeking variety in the irrigation maintenance field. Due to the nature of being a botanical garden, the successful candidate will have a strong plant care background to aid in their ability to successfully provide the correct irrigation in all our different types of growing conditions.

Primary duties:

Assist in the maintenance of gardens and nursery irrigation systems.
Assist in the installation of new irrigation systems and repairing of existing systems.
Assist in water quality monitoring both in lake as well as at irrigation nozzle heads.
Assist in maintaining fertigation tanks that they are in operational order and operate as directed.
Cleaning and maintaining irrigation filtering systems throughout the garden.
Assist with irrigation run times so they do not conflict with various scheduled garden events.
Troubleshoot and report any issues with irrigation systems to Irrigation Manager.
Work with and coordinate volunteer staff, day laborers and outside contractors to perform various irrigation maintenance duties when necessary.
Work with irrigation support technicians for troubleshooting, diagnosing problems and optimizing our systems.
Other duties as directed and required.


1-2 years full-time irrigation system experience.
Must be able to accurately diagnose and correct common irrigation problems.
Highly motivated and well organized with a strong work ethic, in addition to being willing and able to work full days outdoors in hot and humid environments.
Must be able to work in dirty or potentially hazardous environments, including construction.
Must be able to perform physical work including lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, reaching and heavy digging.
The successful candidate must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license and will be required to undergo a background check prior to beginning work.

Additional Experience in these areas are a Plus but not necessary:

IMMS central control system, ICR remotes, and MS Office.
GIS mapping systems.
Experience with a two-wire system.
