Senior Tree Trimmer

The City of Burbank has an immediate opportunity available for a qualified individual to direct a crew and perform a variety of skilled tree maintenance and removal; climb trees and operate aerial devices and other tree maintenance equipment for the purpose of tree and root pruning, and perform related work as required.

You will direct and train employees, and participate in the trimming, pruning, and maintenance of trees on municipal properties, working from the ground, from ladders, in aerial devices, and by climbing trees with the aid of ropes and climbing saddles; use large and small power equipment and hand tools to cut and trim trees; plant, remove, irrigate, cultivate, apply pesticides, and fertilize trees and shrubs; supervise the work of tree trimmers who are working on the same assignment; supervise a forestry services crew in supervisor’s absence; assist with inspection of trees throughout the City and initiating work orders to trim, spray, or remove trees; operate stump remover, root cutters, spray rig, brush chippers, and skip loader and attachments; cut and remove concrete; make minor repairs to irrigation systems; ensure the safety of property and persons by placing warning devices and other safety apparatus at job sites; prepare and maintain various written reports, and drive on City business. May be required to drive light or heavy-duty truck and/or operate a crane truck; and perform additional functions including, but not limited to, landscape maintenance of parks and other municipal properties.
 
Requires two years of recent paid full-time experience in general tree maintenance including tree trimming and tree climbing; a valid California Class “B” driver’s license or equivalent; and certification as a Certified Tree Worker by the International Society of Arboriculture. A valid California Class “A” driver’s license or equivalent is required within one year of appointment. A crane certification may be required based on job assignment. All required licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.

Additional requirements include knowledge of the characteristics of shade and ornamental trees used in the urban forest; the methods and equipment used in planting, bracing, spraying, injecting, pruning, trimming, and removing trees and shrubs; proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation in order to effectively perform the essential functions of this classification (this is not a language restriction as defined in California Government Code Section 12951); skill in training others in assigned duties and fostering a teamwork environment; ability to ensure safe practices and procedures; follow and give written and oral directions; maintain records and prepare written reports; work holidays, weekends, after hours, and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

Employees in this classification, who are required by applicable laws and regulations to have respiratory protection, shall comply with the American National Standards Institute’s requirements on Practices for Respiratory Protection; possess and maintain the physical condition required to perform essential functions of the classification which include the physical ability to: lift, pull, lower, and carry considerable amounts of weight (often in excess of 50 pounds, tools or other appropriate assistance are recommended to perform the function); bend in all directions; climb ladders; stoop; kneel; reach; twist; squeeze with arms and hands, and stand for extended periods of time.

We offer a starting salary of $4,044 - $5,575 per month ($23.33 - $32.16/per hour) plus superb benefits including a City-contributed retirement plan, cafeteria-style health benefits, and tuition reimbursement.  Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of a City of Burbank application.
