Arborist/Forester

Location: Greater Puget Sound Region
Salary: Depending on experience

The Watershed Company, a regional leader in science-based planning and design for environmental restoration, is seeking qualified candidates in the disciplines of forestry and arboriculture. The ideal candidate would have a strong ecological forestry and arboricultural background. This is a full-time position that will be a part of a multidisciplinary team to support projects with forest stewardship planning, arboricultural development planning, tree inventories and assessments, and urban forest stewardship planning. A minimum of 4 years of experience and certification by SAF, ISA, or ASCA is required. Applicants with experience in ecological forestry, silviculture, applying forest management prescriptions, and managing timber sales preferred. Applicants with ISA TRAQ certification or experience in urban forest management, development review, environmental planning, ecology, and/or GIS, a plus.

In addition to our Kirkland office, we have several offices conveniently located throughout the Puget Sound area, including:

• Seattle

• Mount Vernon

• Whidbey Island

• Federal Way

Duties:

  • Assess small landowner forests and draft forest stewardship plans and timber management plans.

  • Market and develop forestry program, and train employees as needed including expanding services to include timber cruising, valuations, FPA applications, and managing timber sales.

  • Procure, scope, and budget small and large arborist consulting jobs for public and private clients.

  • Manage multiple projects, delegating tasks as necessary to our 9-person arborist staff.

  • Coordinate arborist tasks and project elements with our natural resources, planning, and landscape architecture project managers.

  • Perform tree inventories and health/hazard assessments in ornamental landscapes, street trees and the built environment, and natural area restoration and mitigation projects.

  • Write arborist reports for public and private clients.

  • Review and comprehend civil, architectural, and landscape architectural plans, details, and specifications for management and protection of trees.

  • Provide tree valuations and appraisals.

  • Prepare tree preservation plans and specifications.

  • Monitor and document tree impacts and protection during construction administration.

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience.  

  • SAF, ISA, and/or ASCA certification.

  • Professional demeanor, excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication abilities, and the ability to positively and professionally interact and work with diverse audiences such as private homeowners, public land managers, and professionals.

  • Ability to work effectively as a field representative of Watershed and communicate knowledge of forestry and arboriculture to clients and the public.

  • Experience understanding clients’ needs and tailoring project scopes and budgets.

  • Experiencing cruising forests, providing management prescriptions, filling FPA applications, and managing timber sales.

  • Experience drafting forest stewardship plans, timber management plans, or other forest resource plans.

  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

  • Demonstrated ability to use standard computer programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Desired Experience:

  • Associates or bachelor’s degree in Arboriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Plant Science, Landscape Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.

  • Experience with wildland firefighting.

  • ISA Tree Risk Qualification (TRAQ).

  • Knowledge of and experience in AutoCAD, GIS, and GPS for tree inventory mapping.

  • Thorough knowledge of the care and maintenance of trees used for landscaping of private and public urban areas as well as natural area restoration/mitigation sites. The work requires the ability to identify trees and plant materials and to recognize plant diseases, pests, cultural and nutritional deficiencies, and recommend corrective treatments.

  • Experience developing tree preservation plans and specifications.

 

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range is $35 - $40 and depends on experience and qualifications. Benefits include medical/dental insurance, continuing education, performance bonuses, retirement program with future matched payments and opportunities for ownership.
