Seasonal Gardener, Horticulture Operations
Location: Boston, MA
Salary: $32.35 per hour
Position Overview:
This Seasonal Gardener (Horticulture Operations) position is a six-month term appointment starting spring 2023. The successful candidate will join the Arboretum’s Horticulture Department in the stewardship of North America’s oldest public arboretum.
The Horticulture Seasonal Gardeners work alongside the Arboretum’s team of Horticulturists responsible for holistic care of their assigned collection and landscape areas. Seasonal Gardeners assist with such tasks including weeding, pruning, mulching and watering; related equipment operation and maintenance; lawn maintenance, leaf clean-up, and various types of landscape maintenance projects.
The Arboretum seeks a dynamic and diverse group of individuals to fill seasonal positions and encourages all interested candidates meeting the basic qualifications to apply.
Hourly wage: $21.00; 40 hrs./week; Benefits Eligible Position.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
Assist Horticulture staff members with various tasks including:
- Weeding, mulching, and brush chipping
- Pruning
- Transplanting
- Watering
- IPM practices
- Mowing, string trimming, and leaf clean-up
- Litter management
- Operation and maintenance of various equipment
- Landscape maintenance and collection renovation projects as needed
- Other related job duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications:
A minimum of one (1) year experience in the field of horticulture or a related field. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and D.O.T. Medical Examiner’s Certificate as part of the pre-hiring process. Must be able to perform manual labor, including frequent lifting/carrying/transporting loads up to 50 lbs. Required to work in all weather conditions in all seasons and essential staff for weather-related emergencies impacting the grounds.
