Urban Forestry Inspector

Location: Denver, CO
Salary: $23.00-$34.50

About Our Job

 

These are limited positions with expected end dates of December 31, 2023.

 

Denver Parks & Recreation is seeking two Urban Forestry Inspectors to perform intermediate professional level on-site audits, reviews, and inspections while evaluating and prioritizing trees for infestation, disease, structural deterioration, and possible traffic and other safety hazards and ensuring compliance with City ordinances, codes, rules, regulations, and policies. Due to COVID-19, the location of these positions is flexible and will require a combination of remote and in-person attendance that may change over time. When not working remotely, these positions will report to 101 West Colfax Ave, Denver.

 

Job duties and responsibilities of these positions include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Perform routine tree risk evaluations of City trees located in the public right-of-way as well as private property trees to mitigate risks associated with structural defects, diseases, and pest infestations

  • Perform tree appraisals to determine monetary value in case of damage resulting from landscaping, street construction, building construction or demolition, or other casualty losses

  • Create and implement tree protection for demolition and new construction projects and monitor and work with contractors to ensure correct and continuous protection

  • Issue notices of code violation to property owners when trees are in violation of the Denver Revised Municipal Code. This includes monitoring trees to ensure compliance in a timely manner

  • Ensure tree contractors operating in Denver are licensed and operating within all applicable ordinances, rules and regulations, and assist with monitoring for unlicensed tree contractors

  • Maintain appropriate records and reference files, including electronic inventory records of existing public right of way trees

  • Conduct inventory of all public right-of-way trees by surveying and collecting data for inventory. Update the inventory to reflect any changes including removals, new plantings, or changes in condition of tree

  • Assist with educational outreach and community groups through organized classes and train volunteers to participate in community forestry

 

About You

 

We are looking for experienced and knowledgeable arborists/foresters who are passionate about maintaining and protecting Denver's urban forestry assets. Additionally, our ideal candidates will have:

  • In-depth knowledge and experience identifying trees in the Denver Front Range area

  • Experience with code enforcement and compliance; conflict resolution in a compliance setting

  • Experience with tree appraisal and diagnosis of biotic and abiotic tree disorders

  • Experience with Tree Keeper; understanding of mobile devices

  • Experience using Microsoft software (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access)

  • ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) Certification

  • Colorado Pesticide Applicator License

  • ISA Certified Arborist

  • ISA Municipal Specialist Certification

  • Education: Associate degree in Arboriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, or related field

  • Experience: One (1) year of experience with tree identification, diagnosis of biotic and abiotic plant stresses, and tree inventory system

  • Licensures/Certification(s): Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Requires possession of an International Society of Arboriculture Certification by the end of the probationary period. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment

  • Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
