Arboriculture Internship

Location: Hockessin, Delaware
Salary: $12/hour

Experience a one-year internship at Mt. Cuba Center, a premier botanic garden in Hockessin, Delaware that inspires an appreciation for the beauty and value of native plants and a commitment to protect the habitats that sustain them.  Internships follow a full-time schedule (40 hours/week) from May 31, 2022 through May 12, 2023. The pay rate is $12/hour and medical benefits are included. Optional free housing is provided onsite at Mt. Cuba Center. The Internship experience provides:

  • Applied work experience in a specific area of study
  • Professional networking and mentorship opportunities
  • An individual project through the year that culminates in an in-house presentation
  • Education related to native plants and ecological horticulture
  • Field trips to local horticultural destinations

The Arboriculture Intern will learn first-hand how Mt. Cuba Center’s arborists manage an extensive collection of trees located in the gardens and natural lands. This internship presents an excellent opportunity for an individual who plans to pursue a career in arboriculture.

The arboriculture internship program covers a full range of tree care tasks, such as planting, pruning, and removals. Through the immersive experience, the intern will become proficient at using ropes, knots, pole saws, and pruners.  Other arboricultural skills taught in the program include identification of native trees, plant health care, cabling, and groundwork. Training will culminate in advanced instruction on tree climbing and chain saw operation.

An additional component of the program is participation in the tree inventory project.  The intern will work closely with the Arboriculture Manager to evaluate the overall condition of trees that form the canopy above Mt. Cuba Center’s gardens.  Data collected will be used by the Horticulture and Curatorial teams to make informed decisions on tree selection, siting, planting, maintenance, and removal.
