Tree Trimmer I/II

Location: Santa Barbara, CA
Salary:

Under supervision, participates in and/or performs a variety of duties related to the care and maintenance of trees; trims trees by removing dead, diseased, or excessive foliage using pole saw, chainsaw and other equipment.  Rigs slings and lines to cut lower limbs and branches; operates aerial lift equipment to remove or prune tall trees and climbs trees using rope and saddle as necessary.  Removes tree stumps, operates tree-stump grinder; loads and runs chipper truck; and cleans ground of debris.  Answers questions from the public and property owners regarding tree-trimming activities. Works safely at all times in conformance with CAL OSHA regulations, including properly marking off work areas on streets and utilizing proper warning techniques.
 
Tree Trimmer I is the entry-level class in the Tree Trimmer series.  This class performs more routine tasks and duties including operating the chipper and assisting with tree trimming activities.  One year of tree trimming experience is desirable.

Tree Trimmer II is the full journey level class within the Tree Trimmer series. This class performs the full range of duties as assigned including all tree trimming assignments. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit, and exercises functional and technical supervision over lower level staff at the job site. Two years of tree trimming experience is desirable.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

 

Knowledge of:  Proper arboricultural techniques and aesthetic considerations necessary when structurally pruning City trees; materials, methods and equipment used in trimming and removal of trees; safety consideration in street tree maintenance work, tree climbing techniques.
 

Skill in:  Safely operating tree trimming equipment such as aerial lift, chipper truck, tree stump grinder, chain saws, front end loader and hydraulic pole saws and pruners, climbing trees as necessary, driving large two axle trucks, and towing a chipper.
 

Ability to:  Identify a variety of local trees, trim trees to Western Chapter ISA pruning standards that avoid harm to growth and development. Work above ground, both in aerial lift or roped into trees. Perform basic maintenance on tree trimming tools and equipment. Work cooperatively with others and tactfully answer questions from the public and property owners.

 

License Requirements:  Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months of appointment, a valid Class B California Driver's License.

Certification by tree care professional organizations is desirable.
