Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Employment is contingent upon the candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up in excess of 50 lbs.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The salary range for this classification is $2,990 - $5,404 monthly.

Major Duties

Under general supervision of the Grounds Manager, the Tree Trimmer maintains trees and shrubs to promote their health, appearance, and safety. In addition, the Tree Trimmer performs gardening, grounds maintenance, and landscape on a less frequent basis.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

Two (2) years as a tree trimmer with general experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas plus two (2) years of grounds maintenance experience with a broad knowledge base in gardening, grounds maintenance, and landscaping., Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

Preferred Qualifications:

Work experience and training from a professional tree trimming and grounds maintenance company

Certification: Valid driver license

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to trim trees according to industry-accepted practices and standards. Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in trimming, pruning, cultivation, and caring for trees. General knowledge of different species of trees and their growing characteristics as related to pruning and shaping. Good knowledge and abilities in tree trimming and tree maintenance work.

Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position, and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Equipment:

Use of chainsaws, hedge trimmers, edgers, string line trimmers, walk-behind mowers, blowers, verification, and cultivation equipment, tractors, dump trailers, utility vehicles, pruners, and loppers, small hand tools. Use of campus vehicles and carts.

Responsibilities

50% Trimming and maintenance of trees, shrubs, and other plant material. Responsible for top and reshape trees; trim or remove dead, diseased, or unsightly growth and trim new growth; use both power saws and handsaws; prune and trim trees to achieve attractive shapes; treat cut surfaces to protect them from fungi and insects; fell and remove trees when work can be done from the ground; apply treatment to trees having diseased or unhealthy conditions; occasionally plan, cultivate and irrigate trees; maintain tree trimming and pruning tools in good working order; may operate and perform minor maintenance on tree shredding equipment; may drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in the performance of assigned duties

40% Grounds maintenance and landscaping Responsible for grounds maintenance and landscape installation, which includes but is not limited to the following: string line trimming, mowing, hedge trimming, weed abatement, weeding, blowing, seeding, mulching, watering, irrigation maintenance, and minor system repair, fertilization, planting, cultural practices, low branching of trees, assisting on landscape projects, trash pick up, emptying trash receptacles, planting flowers, soil cultivation, washing of hardscape, sanitizing and disinfecting campus amenities, power washing, leaf raking, spot irrigation of dry areas, perform minor repairs and maintenance on small tools and equipment, the lining of athletic fields, sports field maintenance, baseball and softball field dugout cleaning, tree staking, utilization of all small tools and equipment related to grounds maintenance and basic landscape installation.

10% Other related duties as assigned
