Forestry Worker

Location: West Chicago, IL
Salary: $42,238 - $56,316

Job Purpose

This position manages district trees and shrubs in order to provide safe and aesthetically pleasing areas for recreation and to promote natural area conservation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform tree removal and storm damage remediation
  • Perform nursery management to plant and harvest trees and shrubs in the nursery, and plant health care
  • Assess and trim trees for hazards, structural integrity, and tree health
  • Plant trees and shrubs annually
  • Assist with prescribed burns, remove invasive species, and cultivate native plants
  • Perform turf restoration
  • Perform tree inventories, including diagnose hazard tree, monitor disease, and insects, and keep a record
  • Assist with public relations events
  • Perform other duties as required

Education and Experience Required

Related Experience:  Two (2) years of arboricultural experience, equipment operation, and tree care including climbing; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special training or other license, certification, etc.:   Aerial Lift Certification, First Aid/CPR Certification, Stihl Chainsaw Safety and Maintenance Certification; ability to obtain an Illinois Department of Agriculture Pesticide Operator’s License within six (6) months of employment; ability to obtain ISA Arborist Certification within one (1) year of employment; ability to obtainMidwest Ecological Prescribed Burn Certification or equivalent within 2 years of employment; ability to obtain a Class A (CDL) Commercial Driver’s License (with air brakes and tanker endorsements) within six (6) months of employment. Valid Driver’s License Required.

Knowledge Of:  Tree worker safety standards including ANSI climbing, pruning, and planting standards; turf science and culture; management practices used in arboricultural industry; equipment used for integrated pest management, fertilization, trimming, pruning, and removing trees; methods and practices used in the pruning and planting of nursery stock; use and operation of equipment and tools used in tree maintenance and nursery work; office word processing, database, and spreadsheet software packages.

Skills In:  Climbing trees using modern techniques and equipment for removal of tree limbs, rigging, and felling of entire tree; operation and maintenance of chain saws, pole saws, tractors, augers, ropes, saddles, irrigation equipment, spray equipment, various tractor implements, tree spades, chippers, stump grinders, and aerial lift trucks and hydraulic booms; identification of trees, shrubs, insects, and diseases; use of GPS and GIS.

Hours & Schedule: 6:45AM-3: 15 PM, Monday-Friday (may include weekends)

Comments: Uniforms provided, safety boot and safety glasses allowance.

Working Environment: Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
