Transmission Forestry Specialist III

Job Summary

Responsible for forestry-related activities, specifically patrolling lines and directing and inspecting the work of contract crews to meet transmission line safety, reliability and compliance requirements in the assigned Forestry area within the transmission system. Conducts field observations of tree trimming and landscape maintenance contract work to ensure that adequate clearance between trees, brush and electrical conductors is maintained. Supports the areas Transmission Forestry Coordinator in managing the workload, using advanced skills and experience to assist with scheduling and budgeting of vegetation management work that meets NERC and PJM requirements and budgetary targets. Schedules and coordinates right-of-way clearings for new construction projects. Examines plans and specifications to determine work procedures and costs. Monitors and evaluates operational costs and performance of tree trimming and landscape maintenance contractors. Reviews and approves contractor labor worksheets and invoices. Resolves most customer complaints and issues independently, referring only the most complex/severe issues to the Forestry Coordinator. Monitors placement of erosion control devices. Acts as mentor to less experienced Forestry Specialists and assists with their training.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

At least 6 years of directly related experience (Utility Arboriculture), Advanced knowledge of arboriculture, urban horticulture, forest management, dendrology, landscape maintenance principals, tree trimming techniques, and herbicide application. Strong knowledge of the identification of trees and growth habits. Use of herbicides, rehabilitation, right of way management. Strong knowledge of electrical principles and transmission circuitry. Strong knowledge of accounting and contract administration. Skills: Effective written and oral communications, strong customer service, effective organizational and project management. Abilities: Demonstrated problem-solving and quick decision-making, setting priorities, working independently, public relations, interpersonal and leadership. Physical attributes required to perform essentials of the job: Walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and hearing.

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:

Bachelor

Other disciplines may be substituted for the preferred disciplines(s) listed above.

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Retains current Arborist Certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, current Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification from the Department of Environmental Quality, and current Commercial Applicator (Pesticide) Certification from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
