Planner I (Arborist)
Location: North Charleston, SC
Salary: $48,214 - $54,308 (Estimated Annual Salary)
This is a professional position responsible for assisting customers with the planning and zoning functions of Charleston County with a focus on Tree Protection and Preservation. Applicants must be self-motivated, possess an understanding of land use planning and land development processes and design concepts, and exhibit excellent interpersonal relation skills with the ability to convey verbal, written, and graphic communications in a professional manner.
OPEN UNTIL FILLED – APPLICATION REVIEW BEGINS IMMEDIATELY
Duties include, but are not limited to: reviewing site plans and development documents in compliance with the Zoning Ordinance and tree care best management practices; researching property records; coordinating with other departments and agencies; administering and explaining policies, procedures and regulations to the public, developers, business organizations, contractors, design professionals, etc.; coordinating and conducting site inspections in a variety of environmental conditions; assisting customers with questions concerning tree care best management practices; preparing Zoning permits; record keeping; code enforcement; preparing and administering court summons for Zoning violations; attending and participating in scheduled day and evening meetings; preparing reports for public review; keeping immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress; working in the Emergency Operations Center when activated; and performing other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education - Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Architecture, Engineering or related field.
Minimum Qualification - One or more years of directly related work experience OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the job.
The following are required:
1. Valid South Carolina driver's license showing a clean DMV record;
2. A favorable background investigation with includes:
- Criminal history check
- Employment history
- Driving history
3. Medical/Physical examination, including drug testing.
Applicant selected must currently be a Certified Arborist (ISA) or must complete certification within one year of employment and complete the FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) courses required to work in the Emergency Operations Center within six months of employment. Technical skills including the ability to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Microsoft Office Suite, and Bluebeam or AutoCAD software, and have the ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering designs/site plans and specifications are essential for successful applicants.
