JOB DESCRIPTION: The Arborist applies their experience and knowledge of proper arboricultural practices and techniques to skillfully maintain and manage trees throughout the Winterthur property. The Arborist will use their knowledge of the characteristics and cultural requirements of trees, along with an understanding of the design principles of the Winterthur Garden and Estate, to assist in the planning for tree placement and replacement, aesthetic pruning and maintenance treatments. They will be working with interns, volunteers, and garden staff to protect this valuable resource. The Arborist is considered essential personnel and will help with weather emergencies ie. snow removal, severe storm clean-up as well as work 2 – 3 rotating weekends a year. They will participate in Winterthur events and outreach programs such as leading tours.

Compensation: $19/hr

Responsibilties:

1. Tree Maintenance – Tree inspection and evaluation. Tree planting, pruning; tree removal. Installation of cabling, bracing and/or lightning protection systems. Insect and/or disease diagnosis and treatment. Storm damage clean-up.

2. Aesthetic/environmental stewardship - Develop an understanding of the history and design intent of the Winterthur estate. Foster design intent through the incorporation of environmentally responsible methods or practices in maintaining Winterthur’s trees.

3. Equipment Maintenance: Proper cleaning, sharpening maintenance and storage of job-related equipment, ie chainsaw, chipper, climbing and rigging gear.

4. Documentation: Participate in team/departmental planning and garden documentation. Document all garden changes using Landscape Modification Forms. Assist as needed in mapping and plant record updates. E-mail correspondence within/outside of institution.

5. Programming/events: Create and present lecture, demonstrations and provide tours for Winterthur guests and other institutions. Participation in garden/Winterthur events. Can occur outside of normal working hours.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Minimum Experience: High School diploma or GED with 6 years arboriculture-related experience. Certified Arborist or willing to gain certification within a year of hire. Preferred Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field; certified Arborist with 2+ years in Horticulture and experience with Public Horticulture Work Schedule: 7:00 AM - 2:00 PM Monday - Friday with 2-3 rotating weekends per year. Schedule subject to change in response to changing weather conditions.

Knowledge/Skills:

1. Strong working knowledge of tree and arboricultural practices with desire for continued education and collaboration with other institutions

2. Ability to express ideas clearly orally and in writing, good interpersonal skills 3. Working knowledge of Microsoft systems.

Essential Functions:

1. Ability to operate manual transmission vehicles, heavy equipment, aerial lift truck, chainsaws, and brush chippers

2. Ascending and working at heights of up to 120 ft with the use of ropes and climbing equipment.

3. Work outdoors in al temperatures/conditions

4. Exposure to biting insects, poison ivy, pesticides, and fertilizers.

5. Able to stand, kneel or bend for extended periods, to traverse uneven ground, and to lift 50 pounds 6. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license in order to operate Winterthur vehicles
