The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking an energetic and passionate candidate to serve as the Urban Forestry Program Specialist position to join the Forestry Section team in Des Moines, Iowa.  The primary purpose of this position is to be the urban and community forestry partnership coordinator, provide statewide urban and community forestry technical assistance, and serve as the forestry planner for the Iowa Forest Action Plan.
 
Primary responsibilities for this position will include:

  • Urban and Community Forestry Partnership Coordinator:
  • Leverage support and obtain local citizen involvement through volunteer coordination within the communities throughout the state by creating a statewide linkage of diverse groups with State and local programs partnerships.
  • Perform annual outreach to increase the level of volunteers, civic, private and municipal organizations investing in urban forestry across Iowa while creating and tracking those volunteer organizations within a database.
  • Coordinate statewide environmental education program(s) and grants.
  • Guides school district officials, municipal staff, and other public organization in successful applications for grant funding
  • Attend educational planting events; give proper planting demonstrations, presentations, and workshops
  • Attend site visits with schools, city leaders, and other public entities to education about best management practices for urban forester, and make site and species recommendations for urban tree planting.
  • Urban and Community Forestry Statewide Technical Assistance:
  • Responsible for providing technical assistance of forestry and forest health assistance to communities, homeowners, landowners and other public and private entities.
  • Assists cities with urban forestry related activities such as city public/private surveys/assessments, sustainable urban forest training and tree ordinance advice.
  • Forest Planner:
  • Serve as the Forest Planner for the Forestry Section by attending and assisting with the coordination of Forest Planner meetings while working closely with Forest Service to revise and maintain the Iowa Forest Action Plan.
  • Ensures the Forest Action Plan meets all federal requirements and compliments the Iowa Wildlife Action Plan and SCORP Plan.
