Urban Forestry Operations Supervisor

Location: Savannah, GA
Salary: $25.65 Hourly

This position supervises and participates in the care, planting and removal of city trees.  

 

Essential Job Functions

Supervises, directs, and evaluates staff; handles staff concerns; counsels and disciplines staff; completes employee performance appraisals; recruits, appoints, and trains staff. 

 

Meets with personnel to make daily work assignments; resolves problems, issues tools and fuel; assigns personnel to work crews. 

 

Reviews service requests; meets with residents and city personnel to schedule work; inspects each work site; logs work requests on computer. 

 

Monitors work crew activities to enforce safety guidelines and department policies; trains personnel; inspects equipment in use. 

 

Supervises equipment inventory, including chainsaws, pole saws, sprayers, and air compressors; supervises the maintenance and repair of equipment.  

 

Responds to telephone calls and emails from citizens. 

 

Maintains inventory of new trees to be planted. 

 

Supervises the maintenance of the hurricane supply trailer to ensure readiness in the event of an emergency. 

 

Trains city personnel from other departments in the safe use of chainsaws. 

 

Serves on the city’s critical response team. 

 

Responds to after-hours emergencies as needed. 

 

Performs other related duties as assigned. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Landscape or Forestry; with two years of progressive experience in tree maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Minimum three (3) years supervisory experience and Arborist certification required. 

Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

Additional Requirements
Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.

Additional Information

Knowledge of tree care, removal procedures, and safety techniques. 

Knowledge of tree biology, tree identification and diagnosing tree problems. 

Knowledge of the city’s emergency response plan as it relates to the assigned area. 

Knowledge of city personnel policies. 

Knowledge of computers and other modern office equipment/communication devices. 

Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work. 

Skill in the supervision of personnel. 

Skill in the operation of chainsaws, pole saws, aerial lift trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and other job related equipment. 

Skill in public and interpersonal relations. 

Skill in oral and written communication.
