Urban Forestry Consultant

Location: Flourtown, PA (Morris Arboretum)
Salary: $22/hr

The Urban Forestry Consultant is a part-time staff position working up to 1250 hours per year under direction of the Morris Arboretum Associate Director of Urban Forestry. The Urban Forestry Consultant supports Morris Arboretum Urban Forestry program consulting and education activities and key assignments with Penn’s Facilities and Real Estate Services.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

BG Map/ BG Base update and data entry and campus tree condition assessment support services for at FRES/Penn

  • Update and coordinate data using BG-Map and BG-Base for Penn-accessioned tree collection (requires working at the Facilities and Real Estate Services office, 3101 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104 ~1 day/week)
  • Tree inventory and assessments including but not limited to working with Associate Director of Urban Forestry in the field, inputting data

Other services as assigned for FRES/Penn such as tree care and arboricultural quality control, reports and standards recommendation and review

  • Assist with special projects, such as Penn’s Creating Canopy tree giveaways, as requested
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Support for contractual consulting services with Morris Arboretum Urban Forestry Team for various contracts  

  • Tree inventory and assessments including but not limited to working with Associate Director of Urban Forestry in the field, inputting data
  • Assist on construction projects as directed by Associate Director of Urban Forestry
  • Use CAD/GIS/Excel for recording tree inventory and assessment data and client deliverables
  • Use the ArcGIS Collector app and ArcGIS online for mapping inventory and assessment data as directed by BCMA
  • Assist in report writing and editing when needed
  • Participate in fieldwork activities including tree identification, tree inventory, and the visual assessment of trees in urban and natural settings, which includes being outside all day in cold and hot weather
  • Assist with consulting report writing, library research, diagnostic techniques

Set up GIS-related maps and online GIS data collection fields for Morris Arboretum Urban Forestry Team

  • Create and update GIS Online accounts, maps, and data as necessary

Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree is required, Master’s Degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Applied knowledge of CAD (AutoCAD, IntelliCAD, etc.) required
  • Applied knowledge of and experience with GIS software (ESRI ArcMAP, ArcGIS Online, Collector application or their equivalents) required
  • Applied knowledge of and experience with MS Office suite software (Word, Excel, Power Point or their equivalent) required
  • Demonstrated communication skills and abilities to develop and present professional reports required
  • Applied knowledge of and experience with BG Map/Base software preferred but not required
  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist credential is preferred but not required
  • Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle
  • A full background check will be undertaken for the successful applicant

Position continuation depends on earned revenue funding.
