The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University seeks skilled horticulture and arboriculture professionals and students to join the Arboretum’s Living Collections Departments in the stewardship of one of the finest and most significant plant collections and historic landscapes in North America. The Arboretum seeks a dynamic and diverse group of individuals to fill eight (8) seasonal and nine (9) intern positions for the 2020 growing season.

SEASONAL POSITIONS

Seasonal Arborist

The Seasonal Arborist position is a term appointment up to six-months in duration with flexible start dates through spring and early summer. The Seasonal Arborist works alongside fellow members of the Arboretum’s Arborist Team responsible for structural and maintenance pruning across the collections, large-scale plant removals, hazard tree assessments and corrective pruning measures, IPM practices, and other tasks as part of the full horticultural operation. Applicants should have some experience in urban forestry or arboriculture and a basic working knowledge of aerial tree care, i.e., climbing and lifts. Hourly wage: $21.00. Benefits Eligible Position. 

Seasonal Gardener (Greenhouse/Nursery)

The Seasonal Gardener (Greenhouse/Nursery) position is a term appointment up to six-months in duration with a flexible start date through spring. The Seasonal Gardener works at the Dana Greenhouses alongside the Plant Production team responsible for propagating and growing plant material destined for the Arboretum’s permanent tree and shrub collections. The Seasonal Gardener assists with transplanting seedlings, repotting containerized plants, nursery plantings, watering and fertilizing, executing IPM practices, weed management, mulching, leaf clean-up, and other greenhouse and nursery tasks as assigned. Hourly wage: $21.00. Benefits Eligible Position.

Seasonal Gardener (Horticulture Operations)

The Seasonal Gardener (Horticulture Operations) position is a term appointment up to six-months in duration with flexible start dates through spring and early summer. The Seasonal Gardeners work alongside the Arboretum’s team of Horticulturists responsible for holistic care of their assigned collection and landscape areas. Seasonal Gardeners assist with such tasks including execution of IPM practices, transplanting, pruning, weed management, mulching and composting, lawn maintenance and establishment, leaf clean-up, watering, invasive species management, and various types of landscape maintenance and collection renovation projects. Hourly wage: $21.00. Benefits Eligible Position.

Seasonal Gardener (Landscape Operations)

The Seasonal Gardener (Landscape Operations) position is a term appointment up to six-months in duration with flexible start dates through spring and early summer. The Seasonal Gardeners work alongside fellow members of the Arboretum’s Landscape Operations Team responsible for implementation of the institutions mowing operations and aspects of its soils health program, management of irrigation and drainage systems, and other landscape maintenance and construction tasks as needed. Hourly wage: $21.00. Benefits Eligible Position. 

HORTICULTURAL INTERNSHIPS

Isabella Welles Hunnewell Horticultural Internship Program

The Arnold Arboretum offers paid internships in collections management with concentrations in horticulture and landscape maintenance, arboriculture, plant production, or collections curation. Experiences combine hands-on training, along with educational classes and visits to other botanical institutions.  Interns are accepted for 12- to 14-week appointments (typically May through August) with the exception of a limited number of longer-term (18- to 24-week) appointments based on the availability of funding. Hourly wage: $15.00. Non-Benefits Eligible Position.
