What you will be doing:

The Maintenance Technician I/II position provides a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled laboring tasks in support of the operation and maintenance of Town parks, athletic facilities, complex irrigation systems, landscaped areas, and buildings and grounds.
 
The Maintenance Technician I position requires proficiency in all areas of turf, athletic field, irrigation, landscape, and horticulture maintenance and will be expected to cross-train in all aspects of Parks Maintenance duties.

The Maintenance Technician II position requires advanced proficiency in all areas of turf, athletic field, irrigation, landscape, and horticulture maintenance, is cross-trained in all aspects of Parks Maintenance duties has the ability to skillfully operate all related tools and equipment. This position operates at a high level with minimal supervision to complete tasks and has obtained additional education and professional applicable certification(s) in addition to experience.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
The below list is intended to be illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time.

  • Assists, performs and/or directs a variety of routine to complex maintenance and construction activities to include turf maintenance, athletic field maintenance, playground maintenance, trails maintenance, hardscape maintenance, irrigation, and horticultural assignments.
  • Maintains turf including mowing, trimming, fertilizing, aerating, seeding, topdressing and weed control.
  • Applies herbicides and pesticides in accordance with prescribed guidelines; maintains usage records.
  • Maintains athletic fields including infield skin work, clay, field prep, and painting athletic surfaces.
  • Inspects and maintains irrigations systems to include programming controllers, designing systems and layouts and fixing breaks.
  • Inspects playgrounds, splash pads, park amenities, construction activities and athletic fields for safety and compliance with Park standards. Performs ADA site assessments and records data.
  • Installs and maintains concrete work, signage, fences, courts, benches, grills, tables and other park amenities.
  • Performs snow removal activities either by hand, small equipment or heavy equipment as assigned.
  • Removes vandalism and graffiti.
  • Collects trash.
  • Maintains cemetery including locating and excavating gravesites, filling gravesites after burials and recording of all cemetery activities.
  • May perform forestry, open space and horticultural work including tree and floral selection, planting, cultivation, inspection and disease control.
  •  Operates pickup trucks, trailers, tractors, riding and walk behind mowers, edgers, string trimmers, backpack blowers and various hand tools and other power maintenance equipment.
  • Maintains a safe working environment to include safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance activities on vehicles and equipment; follows all safety protocols for working in traffic and congested areas, working in ditches and confined spaces and all other work environments.
  • Assists in the cleaning and organization of shop area.
  • Performs data entry and prepares necessary records and reports including maintenance logs, work orders, safety inspections and ADA compliance records.
  • May assist with related special events to include ordering materials and setting up equipment.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned. 
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate degree preferred.

Tech I:

  • One year of landscaping, laboring, turf maintenance, horticultural, arboricultural, equipment operations or other construction experience.
  • Must also have the following certifications:
    • Valid Colorado Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.
    • First Aid, AED and CPR Certificates within three months of hire.

Tech II:

  • Three years of full time landscaping, laboring, turf maintenance, horticultural, arboricultural, equipment operations or other construction experience.
  • Must also have the following certifications:
    • Valid Colorado Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.
    • First Aid, AED and CPR Certificates.
    • Pesticide Applicators License.
    • Minimum of one industry recognized certification relevant to assigned work group such as: Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA), National Parks and Recreation Association (NRPA), Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado (ALCC), or similar organization.

  • Ability to use or learn to use hand tools and light to heavy equipment such as backhoe, dump truck, bobcat, snow plows, trailers, loaders, small to large walk behind and riding mowers, sprayers, compressors and tractors with implements.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instruction, short correspondence, memos, maps and drawings. Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform common mathematical operations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with employees and the public.
  • Ability to effectively present information to individual and groups of customers, clients, vendors and other Town employees.
  • Ability to deal with problems calmly and effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to train and direct less experienced workers when required.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of standard office equipment, computers and various application programs including parks and open space related specialty software applications.
  • Availability to work on-call schedule.
  • Availability to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
