ROLE of the POSITION

Works to provide the long- and short-term strategic and operational plans for the UNLV Grounds Department and oversee their implementation. Develops plans and programs to improve campus sustainability efforts through water conservation, sustainable landscape practices, and vehicle and equipment replacement programs. Ensures goals align with the overall mission of the University. Effectively communicates goals and objectives and trains employees on campus expectations. Manages the Integrated Pest Management Plan, irrigation maintenance, computerized irrigation central controllers (e.g. Maxicom), and irrigation installations, as well as tree and plant selection, and installation. Manages equipment operations such as mowing, tractors, small equipment, and tree operations. Works with staff or contractors to design landscapes. Manages landscape maintenance, tree management, parking lot maintenance, athletic fields, the University's Xeriscape Garden, and the campus automotive fleet. This position supports a cooperative environment working with members of the campus community to create outdoor space that can be utilized for research, instruction, and recreation.

Works to ensure that the Landscape group is implementing best management practices on campus. Sets landscape maintenance expectations. Supports and moves new initiatives forward. Identifies current and future challenges and proposes solutions. Facilitates an environment that motivates, empowers, and inspires commitment from employees. Demonstrates commitment to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workforce. Works with a spirit of collaboration, inclusion, respect, and collegiality. Creates a team environment where employees are recognized individually and as a team for their accomplishments and successes. Builds competence in others through effective coaching, performance management and mentoring. Provides outstanding customer service to campus partners. Understands the importance of the outdoor environment in student success.

Oversees the effective management and daily operations of assigned staff including lead grounds workers, grounds workers, equipment operators, irrigation team members, and mechanics. Supervises, coordinates, assigns and directs grounds activities. Helps define priorities of work and communicates this information to all staff involved. Monitors work progress and completion utilizing a computerized maintenance management system. Manages landscape projects and new landscape installations. Reviews construction projects for compliance with campus standards and requirements. Assists in the formulation, development, interpretation, implementation, and development of policies, procedures, standards, and programs related to Grounds Maintenance. Oversees and exercises control over University budgets pertaining to Grounds. Serves as the on-campus Arborist and Certified Pesticide Applicator.

This is a management position leading a team of employees who typically begin work at 6:00 am with work ending at 2:30 pm (M-F). Due to the nature of this position, work on weekends and extended work hours may be required to meet the operational needs of the University. Requires the ability to respond 24/7 for consultation on University emergencies and to provide direction and oversight for corrective actions by staff. Requires the ability to work in inclement weather and in harsh conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in a technically oriented field from a regionally accredited college or university, and 5 years of related professional experience, with 3 years of related managerial experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.

Also, must have knowledge of the following:

  • Knowledge of landscape maintenance, tree management, parking lot maintenance, athletic fields, and maintenance of the campus automotive fleet.
  • Knowledge of Integrated Management Plan (IPM), Irrigation Maintenance, Computerized Irrigation Central Controllers (e.g. Maxicom), and Irrigation Installations. 
  • Knowledge of tree, plant selection, and installation. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships and to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies within the university and with contractors and consultants.  

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, or Turf Management. Experience managing grounds in a University environment. Qualified Applicator Certificate – Nevada Department of Pesticide Regulation, and Certified Arborist – International Society of Arboriculture or the ability to get these certifications in 6 months. Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E.).

 

SALARY RANGE

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
