Utility Forestry Pre-inspector - Arizona Public Service

Arizona Public Service is looking for a Forestry Pre-Inspector will provide support to APS Forestry, Fire, & Resource Management Planners and Fire Mitigation Specialists so that the designated programs comply with the department's goals and objectives. This Pre-Inspector role will primarily support goals for fire mitigation and substation landscape maintenance. Responsibilities will focus on inspections of 1) poles to maintain vegetation-free defensible space around poles, as well as quality control for other contract inspectors and crews 2) substations for assurance of bare ground vegetation-free zones, healthy external landscapes, and signs/walls/fences/gates in good condition 3) distributed energy resource sites to ensure weed mitigation is performed to standard. Secondary support may be given to the vegetation management programs of any division which could include 1) making customer notifications for all line-clearance activities to affected landowners including private, federal, state, and local municipalities 2) compiling work assignments for crews 3) schedule work to accommodate customer's needs. As required, distribute copies of APS's customer-relations brochures while making contacts with customers. Operate in conformance with APS accident prevention manual and the APS Vegetation Management Manual. Environmental factors: Subject to work hours outside of the normal work schedule and outdoors during inclement weather situations. Periodically prone to dangers inherent to work sites including exposure to sharp, high-speed rotating equipment, electrical fields, falling and flying debris, difficult terrain, pesticides, and animal, insect, and snake bites. Involves driving throughout service territory and frequent overnight travel.
 
Minimum Requirements Minimum of two year's of experience in utility arboriculture or an International Society Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist with at least 1 year of field experience in utility arboriculture. Degree in Forestry or related field preferred. Must possess and maintain ISA Arborist and Utility Specialist certifications and/or obtain such certifications within two years of employment. Computer experience using windows-based programs including CIS, MS Outlook, Word and Excel. Design experience preferred. Must possess negotiating skills and an aptitude for customer service relations and interpersonal communications. Requires ability to visualize end results of tasks. Ability to apply established policy and practices of the occupation to the resolution of work problems and to identify exceptional cases for referral.
 
Preferred Qualifications: Experience and/or education in one or more of the following: Wildfire Mitigation, Incident Management, Integrated Vegetation Management, Herbicide Application, Project Management, Construction, Electric Transmission & Distribution Design/Operations/Maintenance, ArcGIS web and mobile applications including Collector and Survey123.
