Job Description:

Facilities Development and Management, Grounds Services, seeks a Groundskeeper Specialist (Arborist) to maintain trees and woody plants to ensure they are healthy, safe and in attractive condition, which will include chemical application, repairing, cabling, fertilizing, watering, pruning and removal of any dead, diseased or declining trees or plants.

Essential Duties: 

•Specialize in tree care, the planting and transplanting of trees and plants including site preparation, installation, backfilling, staking, pruning, watering, and mulching.

•Inspect trees and plants, identify disease, pests and other problems, recommend and apply appropriate treatments.

•Identify potentially hazardous trees and other tree-related problems; develop and apply appropriate tree hazard management strategies.

•Maintain records of work performed on all campus trees and maintain tree inventory records

•Maintain grounds and roads, remove debris, water, treat weeds, insects, and other pests. 

•Train, work alongside, and coordinate Groundskeepers in the maintenance of grounds, trees and shrubs as required.

•Maintain lawns, planting areas, sprinkler systems and area watering lines.

•Operate large power and field mowers, hand tools and large vehicles associated with ground maintenance and landscaping activities.

•Perform minor maintenance and repair on equipment and tools as required. Coordinate irrigation and watering activities within area of specialty.

•Perform maintenance, and install/remove outdoor signage

 

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday; 5:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Two (2) years of grounds maintenance experience, OR, Associate Degree in Horticulture or related field e.g. Golf Course Management, Sports Turf Management, Landscape Construction; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved; AND possess and maintain One (1) Grounds certification or equivalent e.g. Arizona Pest Application License, Certified Arborist from International Society of Arboriculture, Certified Grounds Technician from PGMS, Passed Desert Landscaper School from the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

 

Desired Qualifications: 

•Experience in tree maintenance, pruning and deadwooding.

•Experience operating and performing maintenance on specialized equipment including brush chipper, stump grinder, and chainsaws in a safe and efficient manner.

•Experience training, working alongside, and coordinating others in proper pruning practices and work site safety.

•Demonstrated knowledge of tree care concepts and ability to perform various activities related to urban forestry/arboriculture on private and commercial properties such as diagnostics, pruning, and removal, stump grinding, cabling, ferilizing, and planting.

•Demonstrated knowledge of fertilizer and other soil amendments, and/or pesticide application.

•Demonstrated knowledge of local tree species and standards.

•Experience with customer service.

•Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.

 

Working Environment:

Activities regularly require long periods of exposure to external elements indigenous to a desert environment, weather, potential exposure to venomous insects, insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Regularly required to operate a variety of landscaping equipment, tools and machines requiring extended periods of walking over uneven and occasionally rocky surfaces, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 50 pounds. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.  Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.
