The American National Standard: Safety and Health Requirements for Arboricultural Operations (commonly referred to as the Z133 standard) is a United States safety standard for use across the arboriculture industry. With the current Z133 standard in publication since May 2026, the primary focus of the Z133 Committee now becomes ensuring that the current standard is reviewed and updated for its next edition, which is expected to be published in the next five years. Revisions may include responding to new developments in arboricultural practices and technologies, addressing opportunities for improving safety outcomes, and correcting errors.

The first step in this process is transmission of a notification to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) using the Project Initiation Notification System (PINS) form. The PINS provides for the timely and adequate notice of standards development activity, announced in media suitable to demonstrate a meaningful opportunity for participation by all directly and materially interested parties in a fair and equitable manner. The July 31 issue of ANSI’s Standards Action carries the notification of ISA’s intent to revise the Z133 standard.

Participation in the Z133 standards process is available through membership on the consensus committee or task groups, by meeting participation, or by public review and comment. The committee is not actively seeking members, and public comment opportunities are not expected to open until 2028. The next meeting of the Z133 Committee is scheduled for Wednesday, 21 October 2026 in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. Registration will be available as the date approaches on the Z133 website.
