Register for the ISA 2025 Annual International Conference

The ISA is pleased to announce that Mark Johnston, PhD, an independent scholar specializing in arboriculture, landscape, and urban forestry, will be the keynote speaker for the ISA 2025 Annual International Conference, taking place from 19 to 27 October in Christchurch, New Zealand.

In his presentation, Planting Ideas in the Urban Forest, Johnston will outline the international urban forestry movement from the 1970s while highlighting some of the key developments and individuals that have shaped the movement. Additionally, the presentation will discuss the many exciting initiatives that have pioneered new ideas and approaches to urban forestry and urban greening, including city-wide projects in London, Dublin, Cardiff, Glasgow, and Belfast, as well as various national programs.

The winner of the 2023 ISA R.W. Harris Author's Citation Award, Johnston has published more than 50 academic papers. He is the author of several books, including Trees in Towns and Cities: A History of British Urban Arboriculture, Street Trees in Britain: A History, and, what he regards as his magnum opus, a 560-page work entitled The Tree Experts: A History of Professional Arboriculture in Britain.

In addition to Johnston's keynote presentation, this year's conference agenda features a lineup of dynamic speakers and educational breakout sessions that discuss the latest trends, developments, and technologies in the arboriculture industry.

New Zealand, with its diverse landscape, promises a unique experience for all. From exciting adventures to the rich traditions and culture of the indigenous Māori people, and a pristine environment, the country offers a lot to explore. All this, accompanied by a strong commitment to sustainability, makes New Zealand an ideal location for our conference.
