The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is proud to announce that the International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026. 

“We are thrilled to be celebrating another huge milestone for ISA, just a couple of years after our organization’s centennial,” ISA CEO and executive director Caitlyn Pollihan said. “Tree climbing competitions have been a longstanding way for arborists to showcase their skills and techniques in an educational and competitive environment. We can’t wait to celebrate the 50th ITCC anniversary with climbers from around the world during this year's competition.” 

The ITCC got its start as the "ISA Jamboree" in 1976, held in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. Tree climbing competitions first began with leadership from the ISA Western Chapter in California, U.S., to train classic skills that would prepare a climber to perform aerial rescues with only a rope.  

Over the years, the number of ISA Tree Climbing Championship qualifying events have continued to grow, with an increasing number of events and locations. As ISA’s network of chapters and associate organizations continues to grow, so does the number of events run using the ISA ITCC Rules. The focus of these events remains on climbing safety, best practices, and promoting the practice of arboriculture.  

For the 50th anniversary of the ITCC, the world climbing championship is returning to its roots in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. The ITCC will be held from 9-11 October for the top climbers to compete for the title of World Champion.   

“Hosting the 50th anniversary of the International Tree Climbing Championship back in St. Louis is a true honor for the Midwestern Chapter ISA and a celebration of the volunteers who make this event possible,” Midwestern Chapter ISA president Steve Grantham said. “The dedication to climbing, expertise, and passion embody the collaborative spirit of our chapter and the legacy of excellence that has defined ITCC for five decades.”
