Climbing Arborist- City of Plano Parks and Recreation

Location: Plano, Texas
Salary: Competitive salary based on qualifications and experience.

The Climbing Arborist performs skilled tree care work involving tree pruning, removal, planting, and maintenance in parks, medians, trails, public facilities, and other City-owned properties. This position requires advanced climbing and rigging techniques, safe operation of forestry equipment, and a strong commitment to public safety, environmental stewardship, and exceptional customer service.

The Climbing Arborist works as part of a crew to maintain the City's urban forest while ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Climb trees using ropes, saddles, aerial lifts, and other approved climbing equipment to perform pruning, removals, inspections, and maintenance.
  • Perform structural, corrective, clearance, and young tree pruning according to ANSI A300 standards.
  • Remove hazardous, diseased, damaged, or dead trees using proper climbing, rigging, and felling techniques.
  • Operate and maintain chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, aerial lifts, skid steers, loaders, and other forestry equipment.
  • Inspect trees for structural defects, disease, insect infestations, and other health concerns.
  • Assist with emergency storm response and debris removal operations.
  • Perform tree planting, watering, staking, mulching, and establishment care.
  • Set up traffic control and work zone safety measures in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment usage, and inspections.
  • Respond professionally to citizen inquiries and provide information regarding urban forestry practices.
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of climbing gear and safety equipment.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist with special projects, community events, and urban forestry initiatives as assigned.
