Presentation Description
Title: Can Anyone Calculate Tree Stability?
Summary: For several years tree experts have tried to assess breakage and uprooting failure potential of trees based on technical measurements. Such calculations may seem reliable at first glance, but a more detailed analysis shows many ‘hidden’ problems. Simple statistical tests and error propagation assessment reveal strong basic limitations of all these numerical approaches. As a consequence, the expert evaluating a tree is still more important than any calculated numbers and will still be held responsible for his or her judgment. Still, qualified use of measurements and numerical analysis can help produce more reliable evaluations. This presentation introduces the German Standard DIN 1319 and outlines how to reliably measure and calculate tree stability.
