Job Detail

Urban Forestry Program Supervisor

Location: Eugene, OR
Salary: $66,996.80 - $86,652.80

Are you an urban forestry professional ready to join one of the Pacific Northwest's premiere programs? Eugene's Urban Forestry program is part of the Green Infrastructure Section of the Parks and Open Space Division within Public Works. The Green Infrastructure Section is focused on services within the public right-of-way including the urban forest, green stormwater facilities, vegetated medians and specialty landscapes.

Eugene's Urban Forestry program is primarily responsible for approximately 76,000 street trees of 406 varieties. This portion of our urban forest has an estimated value of $151 million, and provides a conservatively estimated $5 million in annual benefits to Eugene residents. The FY19 operating budget allocation is $2.2 million to maintain these important assets. Urban Forestry's mission is:  to maximize the social, economic and environmental benefits of Eugene's urban forest and to minimize its costs and liabilities by means of adaptive management and community engagement.

The Urban Forestry Supervisor leads a team of nine municipal arborists/urban foresters in a range of classifications from Park Specialists, Technical Specialists and Management Analyst. The team is highly credentialed, most recently obtaining accreditation by Society of Municipal Arborists. Every member of the team is an ISA Certified Arborist and many hold multiple additional ISA certifications including six Municipal Specialists, eight Qualified Tree Risk Assessors, two Tree Worker/Climber Specialists and three Board Certified Master Arborists.

Two years ago, the program refocused its efforts toward a more proactive approach with an ideal blend of 80% focus on maintenance pruning zones and 20% responsive to incoming work requests. This balance is challenged by many factors including a large volume of incoming service requests, damage from storms, disease infestation, impacts of climate change, and limited resources. Do you have what it takes to become the next Urban Forestry Supervisor and lead this evolving program strategically through to the next level?

The ideal candidate will have the ability to translate vision into plans and inspiration into action through solid leadership and your ability to collaborate within the organization, with active external partners, and with community members representing a myriad of viewpoints. You are a knowledgeable urban forester with an empowering and inclusive leadership style. A coach that is able to draw out the unique strengths of your team, trusts and values their expertise, and allows each individual to grow to their full-capacity. You are passionate about trees and balanced in your approach to the intersection of a healthy urban forest and vibrant local development. You continuously adapt, adjust and implement strategies for innovative solutions that best fit the organization.
