Arboriculture Supervisor
Location: Houston, Tx
Salary: $55000 - $65000 per year
Job Summary: The Arboriculture Supervisor is responsible for supervising, directing, and conducting work related to tree health care of native specimen trees, hazard tree mitigation, integrative pest management programs, and overall maintenance and resiliency of specific trees throughout Memorial Park. This includes proactively supervising the Arboriculture Branch that maintains native specimen trees and mitigates risk of trees to maintain low-hazard and resilient Park areas. The Arboriculture Supervisor will be responsible for directing work to be completed weekly and supervising a team in designated areas. Through oversight and strong collaboration across all departments, the Arboriculture Supervisor will lead team members to safely, efficiently, and effectively complete arboriculture practices with guidance from the Conservation Operations Manager and the Park Operations Director.
Base Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:00am- 2:30pm, may adjust based on seasons.
Responsibilities and Duties Include:
- Use and implement best arboriculture management practices to mitigate tree risk and maintain specimen trees in a competent and timely manner by assessments and monitoring, removing trees and deadwood, integrative pest management including herbicide application, plant health care actions including soil enhancement, mulching, fertilization, and pest preventative treatments, and structural pruning.
- Supervise, lead, and direct team members daily to maintain areas and plan for upcoming tasks or projects.
- Work collaboratively with Coordinators and Supervisors to effectively utilize team members to mitigate risk and maintain healthy specimen trees.
- Conduct and document training of staff, seasonal workers, interns, and volunteers, including safety training for compliance.
- Physically perform arboriculture practices including climbing, rigging, and using aerial lifts, tree felling, woody debris bucking, removal and chipping, soil collection, soil enhancement, fertilizing, chemical application, checking moisture levels and irrigation, and other daily and seasonal tasks.
- Conduct work in a range of Park spaces, typically near roads, trails, and people.
- Safely operate small and large equipment and oversee others in safe equipment use including utility vehicles, trucks, tractors, backpack blowers, large trailers, skid steer and attachments, backhoe, aerial lifts, climbing gear, chainsaws, pole saws, and stump grinder. Operation may extend for many hours at a time and over the course of several days as needed.
- Keep inventory of, coordinate maintenance of, and purchase supplies, tools, and equipment assigned to field operations.
- Develop the Arboriculture Branch’s annual budget by?forecasting?and anticipating the needs of a quality program.?
- Efficiently spend budget through the year, communicate with vendors and contractors, and use software to track expenses.
- Identify trees and associated pests and document monitoring data and maintenance activities using various data collection tools.
- Accurately coordinate employee schedules to complete weekly tasks and complete timesheets.
- Demonstrate ownership of assigned work by upholding and maintaining standards to the highest degree by understanding plant health and environmental conditions.
- Oversee volunteer needs, delegating tasks to Coordinators. This includes leading and organizing an occasional weekend event.
- Attend arboriculture related capital project meetings and review documents; provide?input, comments, feedback, and?assistance related?to arboriculture areas.
- Respond to any employee comments regarding recognition or disciplinary action from Coordinators and other Supervisors, support development of improvement programs when needed; bring any points forward to Manager when necessary.?
- Communicate issues regarding infrastructure, furnishings, safety hazards, quality of the Park user experience issues as needed via work order system.
- Interact with Park patrons in a courteous and professional manner. Ensure team members are trained and adhering accordingly. Be prepared to provide accurate and pertinent information regarding MPC and the Park.
- Enforce and comply with MPC rules, safety policies, and procedures, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ensure cleanliness of office and storage spaces.
- Assist with trash and debris removal, as needed.
- Assist with other Park Operations teams, as needed.

Requirements
Qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- 5 years of experience in arboriculture tree care including tree risk mitigation, tree pest prevention, tree and soil health, or related field; in which 2 or more years are in a supervisory position.
- High level of knowledge and experience in tree health care and risk mitigation, industry tools and equipment, and project and crew supervision.
- Strong tree identification skills of native and invasive species, preferred.
- Ability to disseminate information regarding industry standards and best practices and train direct reports in arboriculture practices and skills.
- Knowledge and experience in the safe operation of arboriculture industry tools and equipment, including rigging and climbing equipment, hand tools, power equipment, and heavy machinery.
- Experience with GIS and associated equipment and other data collection software, a plus.
- Demonstrated success in working in a team-oriented environment, work effectively with others, ability to work independently, make judgement calls, problem solve, while referring more serious problems to a Manager.
- Strong written and oral communication skills; strong time management and organization skills; highly motivated.
- Proficiency in PC based Microsoft Office software (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and asset management systems.
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Preferred Certifications and Licensures:
- ISA Certified
- Tree Risk Assessment Qualification
- TDA Pesticide Applicator License
Abilities Required:
- Ability to work in a public park with a high degree of public interaction.
- Ability to perform heavy, physical labor daily in all weather conditions repeatedly throughout a workday and work week.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. repeatedly throughout a given workday and work week.
- Sufficient strength, stamina, and manual dexterity to operate power equipment throughout a workday, repeatedly in a work week.
- Must be able to stand, crouch, repel, kneel, stand, walk, and perform various types of manual labor for extended periods of time throughout the workday, repeatedly in a work week.

Compensation:
This is a salary, exempt position with a range of $55,000-$65,000; pay is commensurate with experience. Benefits include full medical, dental and vision benefits, paid time off, short-term and long-term disability, and 401k retirement plan.
