What's the Role?

We’re looking for a highly motivated, skilled, organized and experienced professional to join the Community Services Department and take on the role of Urban Forest Manager. The Urban Forest Manager is responsible for overseeing the operations, maintenance, and enhancement of the urban forest. This key management position will plan, organize, direct and coordinate the activities of the Urban Forest Division, including the Heritage and Street Tree programs, building and development plan reviews/input, project management, and implementation of a new Urban Forest Plan. This position receives direction from the Community Services Director or Assistant Community Services Director and exercises direct and indirect supervision over assigned division personnel. What You'll Do

• Plan, organize, direct and coordinate the activities of the Urban Forest Division and oversee the development of the Division’s work plan.
• Participate in recommending the appointment of personnel; train, evaluate and schedule staff; and support learning development.
• Review and provide input on building and development plans related to tree plantings and removals.
• Develop and manage a variety of projects, grants, contracts and agreements related to urban forest activities.
• Develop, update and/or enforce processes, ordinances, codes and City regulations related to the City’s Urban Forest Program.
• Analyze, prepare reports and make presentations to the City Council, advisory bodies/committees and organizations; provide staff support and attend meetings as necessary.
• Develop and administer the division budget, including analyzing expenses and setting rates and fees; participate in the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies.
• Assist in preparing capital improvement project (CIP) proposals; assist in implementation and management of CIPs.
• Implement and manage a new Urban Forest Plan as part of a city-wide Biodiversity Strategy.

Qualifications & Requirements

The Essentials

• Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college or university (60 semester or 90 quarter units) with major course work in a related field.
• Seven years of increasingly responsible experience in park or forestry maintenance/operations, including at least two years at the supervisory level.
• Possession of a valid California Driver License.
• Possession of an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification.
OR
• Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a related field.
• Five years of increasingly responsible experience in park or forestry maintenance/operations, including at least two years at the supervisory level.
• Possession of a valid California Driver License.
• Possession of an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification.
