Parks and Grounds Tech (Forestry)

Salary: $15.81 - $19.33 per hour

Job Description

The Parks & Grounds Technician will work directly with the Forestry division of the Parks and Recreation Department. This position will work to maintain the City of Columbia’s nature areas, trail systems, and tree-scaping in accordance with urban forestry maintenance principles and practices. The Parks & Grounds Technician will perform maintenance on trees in the City’s public areas by planting, pruning, mulching, watering, and administering disease treatments. This position will assist with the removal of trees in the City’s parks, trails, right-of-ways, public areas, and downtown areas. The Parks & Grounds Technician will perform maintenance on the City’s nature areas by cultivating native plant ecosystems, removing and control of pests, and conducting prairie and forest restoration and health management activities. This position will help with snow removal activities during the winter months and train seasonal staff members during the spring and summer months. Full-time with benefits with annual salary of $32,855 to $40,206 annually ($15.81 - $19.33 per hour) contingent on training and experience. Position hours – Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with varying weekend responsibilities.

Education and Experience

•High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate or technical degree in parks and recreation, horticulture, plant science, turf management strongly preferred.

•Two years of experience in forestry, grounds maintenance, golf course management, sports field management or similar work.

•Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and maintain a safe driving record.

•Ability to obtain position specific licenses and certifications as required.

•Familiarity with of urban forestry practices, trail system design and maintenance, prairie and forest restoration and management, turf management and landscaping practices.
