Public Services Laborer/Equipment Operator

Location: St. Charles, IL
Salary: $30.17-$40.22 Per Hour

The City of St. Charles offers a challenging and supportive work environment that fosters excellence, accountability, learning and professional development. We are seeking two Laborer/Equipment Operator team members, one for the forestry team and one for the construction team.

Position Descriptions Forestry - Performs skilled tree trimming and landscape work, set up and clean-up of special events, and miscellaneous custodial duties and carpentry work. Equipment operation is primarily manual and powered equipment, power saws, bucket truck, stump grinder, chipper, and aerial lift. Certified arborists are highly desirable.

Construction - Performs construction, maintenance, and repair of City owned property and its services, to include repair curbing and sidewalks; and maintain, inspect, and repair storm sewer collection system. Equipment operation is primarily manual and powered equipment, backhoe, end loader, skid steer, street sweeper, sewer inspection and cleaning equipment, excavator and other equipment. Both positions may oversee the work of employees in the completion of projects becoming Acting Crew Leader when needed and respond to emergency situations, such as snow removal, sanitary sewer backups, flooding from rain events, emergency utility locations, signs down etc. and support other City departments/divisions in the abatement of emergency situations.

Requirements • High school diploma or equivalent • 3 years of experience in Public Works, construction, or forestry industry • Strong heavy equipment operation ability and experience • Arborist certification preferred for forestry team • Strong interpersonal communication skills to interact with co-workers and the public • Able to work under varying environmental conditions and lift up to 75 pounds • On-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, reporting no later than 60 minutes of the call-in • Class A Commercial Driver’s License or acquire within six months of hire (in house training available)
