Tree Climber

Location: Ithaca, NY
Salary: Base pay begins at $27.00/hr and goes upward based on experience, efficiency and responsibilies

We are looking for an outstanding, motivated individual to join our dedicated team of tree care professionals as a Tree Climber for the start of our season around April 2023.  We offer a competitive compensation package, 401k with matching, paid time off, and great opportunities for growth in an expanding business.  The role of a Tree Climber in our organization is central to our success and seek a candidate with stellar technical and customer service skills. 

 Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure personal safety and safety of the crew at all times.  Report and document any safety concerns or incidents to the owner.

  • Performs all required ground, climbing, and aerial lift duties in support of specific job assignments, as directed by crew leader or designated supervisor.

  • Demonstrates and practices proper climbing techniques and procedures, proper pruning and removal skills, proper rigging techniques.

  • Ensure that equipment checks are performed for proper running order each day

  • Interact with customer, discussing any concerns or changes to the work order, ensure clarity on any changes made.

  • Make sure collateral damage to customer or neighboring yards, surrounding structures and any trees outside of those designated in the work order in kept to a minimum.  This includes trees, ornamental plantings, gardens and fencing.  

  • Potentially conducting estimates and generating reasonable cost of each work order.

  • Ability to proficiently organize and run a crew.

  • Serving as an integral member of a team of professionals that is committed to safety on the job, accurate reporting and record keeping, and excellent customer relations.   

Job Qualifications:

  • Maintain A300 Pruning Standards.

  • Certified Arborist Licensure

  • Effective administrative, communication and problem solving skills.

  • Valid NYS driver’s license and clean driving record.

  • Valid CDL license.

  • Ability to operate every piece of equipment and train other crew members as needed to operate safely.

  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs

  • Ability to maneuver various trailers in and out of job sites

Experience Requirements:

  • 1+ year full-time work experience as a tree climber

  • Experience with ropes, knots, pulleys, harnesses, etc 

  • Experienced in all aspects of pruning, removals, and rigging.

  • Managing other people a plus

Training: 

  • On the job

Skills:

  • On the fly problem solving

  • Effective communication with a variety of people and education levels

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in all weather conditions, some hot, some in freezing temperatures, wind, rain and other natural conditions.  

  • Some work is physically intensive for extended periods of time

  • Some days during the off season and bookending the busy season will be only a handful of hours worked a day, if any.  During the busy season, a minimum of 40 hours of work will be performed generally between 7am and 4pm or 8am and 5pm depending on daylight.

  • Some jobs you will be at solo, whereas others you may be working with various members of the Limbwalker team as needed.  

  • Tree work is a fast moving and potentially dangerous industry.  Your ability to think and act quickly and safely is necessary as is carefully listening to instructions from your supervisor or the owner.  Any lapse in this could lead to damage to customer property, personal bodily injury or even death.  We take this seriously.

  • stump grinder

  • chipper

  • dump loader

 

Hazards:

  • being struck by projectile tree debris from cutting, pruning, chipping, stump grinding

  • rope burn

  • body fatigue and musculoskeletal demands

 

Sensory Demands:

  • glare from sunshine while performing tasks

  • be visually and aurally attentive to warning/hazard lights on equipment

  • loud volume from chainsaws or other equipment – noise level inhibit adequate verbal communication understanding

  • a good sense of balance

  • high vibration is experience during the operation of a chainsaw

 

Emotional Characteristics:

  • Must display a calm, confident and personable persona when interacting with the customer.  Ensure non-verbal indicators are in line the severity of the situation and are not over or under expressed.
