Utility Forester

Department:          Operations

Reports To:           Supervisor - ROW

SUMMARY

Coordinates the activities of workers engaged in removing trees and vegetation that interfere with electric power lines by performing the following duties.  Reviews plans and procedures to increase production and efficiency of the vegetation management program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Examines work orders to determine location of trees to be pruned or felled by trimming crews.

Inspects electric power lines near trees to be trimmed and secures clearance to work on lines if necessary.

Conducts work planning and property owner notification for vegetation maintenance.

Performs auditing of completed vegetation maintenance work to ensure compliance of company specifications.

Conducts an inventory and assessment of dead and hazard trees.

Documents and performs report generation of vegetation maintenance work.

Inspects and evaluates herbicide application.

Coordinates vegetation crews during storm recovery.

Orders removal of trees when necessary.

Explains tree trimming activities to property owners.

Responds to member and property owner complaints in a professional and courteous manner.

Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.

Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.

Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.

Documents and performs report generation of vegetation maintenance work.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Forestry (or related) degree from an accredited four-year college and/or a combination of education, training and three years of proven utility arboricultural experience holding the listed certifications below.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports and business correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Arborist Certification

Utility Specialist Certification

Pesticide Applicators License

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently communicate verbally by telephone, two-way radio or in person to co-workers, members, the general public and business associates.  The employee is frequently driving alone in a pickup for up to 200 miles per day to various job sites.  This also requires getting in and out of the vehicle frequently during the day.

Frequently walking, bending, and standing while encountering various types of work surfaces such as grass, dirt, and concrete outdoors during all types of weather conditions.  The employee is also occasionally exposed to physical hazards from electricity, snakes, dogs and insects. 

The employee is occasionally sitting at a workstation viewing, editing or inputting data into a computer as well as performing other tasks frequently with writing and drafting instruments which require hand, wrist and finger motions.
