Position Details

Salary: Starting at $23.81/hour (DOE)

Status: Non-Exempt/Full-time

Department:  Forestry

Summary of Position

This position is responsible for the care and management of the city’s urban forest.

Major Duties:

  • Completes an annual Dutch Elm Disease survey of elm trees on public and private property.
  • Inspects trees in the city limits and sends citations to homeowners who are out of compliance with current tree ordinances; recommends special assessments for failure to comply.
  • Issues permits for planting trees on boulevards; determines tree species, spacing, and number.
  • Inspects newly planted boulevard trees to ensure compliance.
  • Meets with property owners to inspect trees and diagnoses pests and diseases; provides recommendations for mitigation.
  • Trims/removes trees that are in violation city ordinances, chips fallen trees/limbs that may fall that are city responsibility, grind stumps of removed trees on city property or that fall within city ordinance.
  • Plants and cares for trees.
  • Applies for grant funds for the removal of trees with Dutch Elm Disease and for the planting of new trees.
  • Assists other departments under Grounds Maintenance supervision (Cemetery/Grounds Maintenance). I.E. Digging of graves, trimming of cemetery, mowing vacant lots, snow removal on city properties.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Manages the city’s Tree City USA recertification.
  • Develops proposed amendments to city ordinances related to tree management.
  • Performs related duties.

 

 Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver’s license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist certification within one year from date of hire.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain commercial pesticide license with necessary endorsements within 6 months from hire date.
