The Position

About this position:

Portland Parks & Recreation - Urban Forestry Division is seeking a Park Tree Maintenance Coordinator to evaluate, prioritize, and support the implementation of the short-and-long term maintenance needs of Portland’s park tree assets.
 
The coordinator position will apply technical knowledge of arboriculture and current industry tree maintenance standards to create and manage a comprehensive proactive tree maintenance regime.  The ability to successfully communicate and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders, other City bureaus and private community members is essential.  This position is skilled at working with a variety of people, coordinating complex tree maintenance scenarios, providing strong customer service, and innovative program oversight including implementation, tracking and reporting.

 

As a Park Tree Maintenance Coordinator, you will: 

  • Lead development and management of a preventative Park tree maintenance program.

  • Create and maintain standards, schedules, work flow processes and similar Park tree care program elements.

  • Perform routine evaluation of City owned Park trees to prioritize and coordinate short-and-long term maintenance needs.

  • Compile Park tree maintenance requests/work orders and align with other maintenance issues.

  • Track work orders and stump grinding and tree replacement schedules and ensure programmatic compliance while employing asset management software.

  • Collaborate with partnering agencies and work groups to assist in determining their needs and goals for assigned areas.

  • Support Operations work team with Tree Emergency Response during large events including both administrative and field capacities.

  • Forecasting maintenance schedule and coordinating utility line clearance, parking and traffic control permits and park access challenges prior to crew assignment.

  • Identify/Investigate pathogens, watering deficiencies and other tree stressors affecting City trees.

  • Provide notifications to partnering agencies and work groups of proposed activities in their areas.

  • Provide notifications and coordinate with adjacent property owners ahead of crew activities.

  • Serve as Urban Forestry Operations Liaison for the PP&R Sustainable Landscape Initiative, View Clearing initiatives and similar tree-related programs and projects.

  • Quality control and follow up inspection of maintenance activities.

  • Identify common tree/infrastructure issues such as sight lines, lighting, building clearances impacted by tree canopies and incorporate into maintenance schedules.

Work Location

Currently, many positions with the City of Portland are being performed remotely due to COVID-19.  In the future, current positions classified as “full-time remote” could: 1) remain full-time remote, 2) become a remote/onsite mix, 3) revert to full-time at a city work location. As the situation evolves, the exact work location of the position in this recruitment may change based upon leadership direction and approval.

To Qualify

 

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their supplemental question responses and resume how their education, training and/or experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:
  1. Experience in comprehensive arboricultural practices including tree evaluation and assessment, tree pruning, tree removal, tree planting and various plant health care techniques while navigating the challenges of working in a municipal park setting. 
  2. Experience establishing and maintaining successful working relationships, that include effective collaboration with diverse internal and external stakeholders, such as other departments, agencies, nongovernmental and private organizations, and diverse community groups.
  3. Experience developing, creating and maintaining standards, schedules for programs and projects including implementation, tracking and reporting.
