Parks Administrator

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Administers the natural resources division projects including but not limited to land acquisition, development of parks, trails and protected green space; park improvements, paved metro loop path, landscaping, maintenance and capital projects to improve
Consults with external partners, non-profit sponsors and internal stakeholders to develop and maintain natural resource management plans
Coordinates staff involved in locating grant opportunities for park initiatives efforts
Exercises supervision over subordinate personnel

Examples of Duties

UNDER GENERAL DIRECTION
Assists in budget preparation and monitors and controls expenditures
Represents the department to the public to coordinate, explain and discuss programs and services
Directs the park initiatives project and acquires land for new parks, develops parks, trails, protected green space, and loop paths which will connect the parks system
Manages the landscaping, maintenance and capital programs to enhance the park system, and develops policies and procedures to protect park lands
Addresses resource management issues, including reforestation, restoration, exotic species control, riparian area management and control of illegal recreation activities
Prepares, in conjunction with management, the strategic plan for the division which includes improvements related to infrastructure, educational and resource management programs
Coordinates the activities of partnerships involved with all resource and management projects, develops and discusses with stakeholders the master plan for newly acquired park lands
Manages data collection including inventories of geological, natural, cultural and biological resources; client information and program data, and resource management issues requiring action; prepares reports on activities and completes special projects
Works with environmental, state and local regulatory agencies to develop and maintain natural resources management plans for undeveloped and underdeveloped Metro Parks? open spaces to benefit water and air quality and plant and animal resources
Identifies natural resource management alternatives, regulatory issues and confers with environmental and regulatory agencies to discuss alternatives and methods to address matters that may impact water quality and the ecosystem

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree
Agriculture
Business Administration
Environmental Science
Forestry
Horticulture
Landscape Architecture
Park Management
Public Administration
Recreation
Related field

WORK EXPERIENCE
Five years of park or facility management, landscaping, horticulture, forestry, or grounds maintenance experience, including three years of supervisory experience

EQUIVALENCY
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, but must include three years of managerial experience

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must not have been convicted of a felony
Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis
Must be on 24 hour call
Must work a varied schedule
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work

Supplemental Information

DESIRABLES
• Experience in Urban Forestry, arboriculture, horticulture or related field and knowledge of tree species and their biological requirements;
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and express complex ideas
• Prior experience with municipal tree ordinance is strongly preferred
• Computer skills at the intermediate level of proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite Products (Word, Excel, Access), computer software applications to manage the urban forest
• Ability to work independently, exercising initiative and independent judgment
• Ability to use analytical capabilities of GIS is preferred
• Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and present data and information.
• ISA Arborist Certification and Tree Risk Assessment Qualification are strongly preferred
• Ability to relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, civic, community and business groups and the general public
