HortScience | Bartlett Consulting (H|BC), a Division of the F. A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company, is a horticulture, arboriculture, and urban forestry consulting firm that helps state, local, and federal government, public agencies, and commercial clients create and preserve enduring landscapes.

The H|BC team is based in Pleasanton, CA. Clients turn to us when they need support with tree preservation projects, tree risk assessment and management, tree inventories and management plans, plant problem diagnosis, and soil, plant, and water assessments.

H|BC is currently seeking an experienced full-time Consulting Arborist and Urban Forester to join our growing team. This unique opportunity will allow you to gain experience across a wide variety of services, projects, and geographies. As an integral member of the team, you will help us assess, research, and deliver highly effective and workable solutions to our clients.

Responsibilities

The consulting arborist and urban forester position involves a wide range of activities including field assessments, report writing, project management, client interaction and communication, presentations at public meetings, continuing education and maintenance of professional credentials, business promotion, and other assigned duties. The company office is located in Pleasanton, CA. Travel throughout the greater SF Bay Area to job sites is required. Key job tasks include:

  1. Provide on-site consultation, data collection, field monitoring, and mapping.
  2. Inspect trees and landscapes and provide assessments of health and condition, and develop recommendations and opinions regarding treatments and management options.
  3. Prepare reports and correspondence using Microsoft Office and Adobe products.
  4. Develop and maintain relationships with individual clients.
  5. Create and maintain schedules and emails in MS Outlook.
  6. Prepare proposals, budgets, schedules, and participate in interviews.
  7. Manage specific projects, providing direction to other staff.
  8. Represent HortScience | Bartlett Consulting. and its clients at public meetings.
  9. Participate in company-wide meetings and office activities and training events.
  10. Maintain client files for projects according to company procedures.
  11. Maintain accurate records (time sheets, expenses, mileage log).
  12. Initiate and review billing for completed projects.
  13. Assist other company staff as needed.

Qualifications

Education, experience, and certifications

  • B.S. degree in horticulture, plant science, urban forestry or closely related field; M.S. degree preferred.
  • ISA Certified Arborist is a must.
  • Registered Consulting Arborist is preferred.
  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualified preferred.
  • Able to identify common trees by common and scientific names.
  • Able to evaluate tree health and structure, and assess risk.
  • Knowledgeable about tree biology and structure, and how environment and site conditions affect health and structural stability of trees and urban forests.
  • Knowledgeable about construction practice as it affects trees.

Computer skills

  • Strong computer skills; able to create and manage electronic files, produce all work product, communications, and maintain records electronically.
  • Proficient in document creation and formatting in Microsoft Word, MS Excel, Adobe Acrobat.
  • Proficient in creating and maintain correspondence and schedules in MS Outlook.
  • Able to use or learn to use basic components of AutoCAD and ArcGIS; ability to prepare maps in these programs preferred.

Personal and physical requirements

  • Able to work outdoors for prolonged periods on uneven ground while carrying approximately 5 lbs. of equipment.
  • Able to perform visual assessments of plants and sites.
  • Able to assess and evaluate complex situations, form defensible opinions, and prepare logical, practical recommendations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences.
  • Able to work efficiently and independently.
  • Strong sense of customer service and cooperative approach to client interaction.
  • Good organizational skills; able to manage time, meet deadlines, keep records and documents organized.
  • Intelligent, reliable, self-motivated.
  • Work and interact with people with integrity and honesty.
  • Valid Driver's License and clean Motor Vehicle Record.
