Virginia Tech is public land-grant university located in the Ridge and Valley Province of Southwest Virginia. The central campus resides on 900 acres, comprises about 200 buildings, and is occupied daily by about 32,000 students and 7,700 faculty and support staff. A complete inventory of trees in maintained landscapes and signature natural areas was completed in 2018, tallying nearly 8,500 living trees. Virginia Tech has been recognized as a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation since 2008 and has won numerous awards for campus sustainability initiatives. Community tree planting events are held twice per year, once in the fall for Sustainability Week and once in the spring for Earth Day/Arbor Day. There is an active Arboretum Committee comprising operational staff as well as faculty from forestry, horticulture, and landscape architecture. Students studying horticulture and urban forestry at the university routinely take on service-learning projects to plant and maintain trees on campus. The annual meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture is held on campus every four years.
