Arboriculture & Urban Forestry
Instructions to Authors
November 20, 2007

ATTENTION!

A page fee will be assessed for all articles submitted beginning January 1, 2008. (This fee does not apply to papers submitted and/or accepted before that date). The first six pages of an article are not charged a fee; however, there will be a $100 per-page fee for any pages beyond six. To estimate your article's page count, count the total double-spaced pages of your manuscript (including figures and tables) and divide by 2.5. This calculation takes into consideration all elements of a published article, including title, abstract, tables, figures, and abstract translations. If you have any questions about this policy, please call or e-mail Peggy Currid, Managing Editor, (217) 355-9411, ext. 210; editor@isa-arbor.com.

General Policies

There is no restriction on who may publish in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry; however, subject matter must be directly related to arboriculture or urban forestry. Contributions should be in one of the following categories: 1) educational information that will enlarge or broaden the background of arborists or those evaluating the practice of arboriculture; 2) technical descriptions of procedures or equipment that will improve the quality or productivity of service provided by the tree care industry; or 3) scientific papers that aid in establishing the foundation of facts upon which the science of arboriculture is based.

Arboriculture & Urban Forestry is published for the arboriculture and urban forest community. Either in the introduction or the conclusion explain, in nontechnical language, the current or potential value of the article to the profession.

All articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, as well as translation rights. No material published in this journal may be reproduced without first obtaining written permission from the International Society of Arboriculture.

Review Policy and Procedures. All manuscripts are subjected to peer review by three or more authorities. Recommendations from reviewers will be provided to the author. The final decision to publish remains the prerogative of the Editor.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Important! Arboriculture & Urban Forestry has a double-blind review process. Reviewers do not know the author names, and the authors do not know the reviewer names. Please prepare your manuscript with no author information (e.g., no byline, no addresses/affiliations). That information will be added after a manuscript has been accepted for publication. Take care to label tables and figures with references to the paper's title, not author names. Any identification in headers or footers should be removed.

Manuscript Format

Consult recent issues of Arboriculture & Urban Forestry for format. Manuscripts will be printed in English with French, German, and Spanish abstracts provided by the Editor. Beginning March 15, 2007, please submit all manuscripts via the online system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/auf.

Title

Keep the title brief but informative.

Abstract

Submit an abstract with the paper (at the beginning, beneath the title and byline). The abstract should not include procedures of the experiment but should provide a concise summary of the results, not exceeding 200 words.

Key Words

Include key terms to be used for indexing. Key terms should be in alphabetical order.

Text Organization

Introductory statements should be included to provide background information to orient the reader and to state the objectives of the paper. The body of the text may be divided with up to three levels of subheadings. Footnotes are not permitted except in tables.

Names and Terms

Scientific names are to be italicized. First use of a common name in the abstract and in the body of the text will be followed by the scientific name in parentheses. Use authorities as part of the scientific name of a species only in taxonomic works or when confusion is likely.

Units of Measurement

All units of measurement are to be metric followed by their English-unit equivalent in parentheses.

Tables and Figures

Keep tables to a minimum. Do not use ditto marks in tables or figures. Captions should adequately describe content so that tables and figures are understandable when considered apart from the text. Figures or photographs do not need to be sized for the journal page. High-resolution digital images are required.

Literature Cited

List references at the end of the article in alphabetical order by name of author. References in the text should be written as follows: (Smith 1988) for a single author; (Smith and Anderson 1998) for two authors; or (Smith et al. 1988) for three or more authors. When citing multiple sources for one point or fact, arrange the references chronologically, from earliest to latest: (Smith 1988; Jones 1990; Brown et al. 1998) Examples of commonly used literature citations are given below.

Periodical: Green, J.W., and S.M. Zorn. 1997. Herbicides to control tree roots. Journal of Arboriculture 23:169-172.
Book: Howard, R.G. 1992. Integrated Management of Tree Pests. Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ. 674 pp.
Book chapter: Hepple, W.R. 1991. Physiology of chemical movement in trees, pp 1-10. In Smith, K.B., and M.E. Brown (Eds.). Systemic Chemical Treatments in Tree Culture. Wiley, New York, NY. Bulletin or report: Morris, M.S. 1988. Biology and control of tree pests. Bulletin 267 of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. New Haven, CT. 23 pp.

Procedure After Submission

After submission, you will receive a confirmation via e-mail. You can also log onto Manuscript Central any time to check the status of your manuscript. The Editor will inform you via e-mail  once a decision is made.

Accepted manuscripts are edited for grammar and conciseness. Changes may be required to achieve uniformity of style, clarity of presentation, and economy of words. A galley proof will be mailed to the author for inspection before printing.

Reprints

Reprints are available in 100-copy lots for a fee. A schedule of charges and reprint order form will be mailed to the lead or "corresponding" author with the galley proofs. The reprint order form should be completed as instructed and promptly returned according to the instructions on the reprint order form.
