Free Resources

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) was founded, in part, as a means of supporting research in the care and management of trees, and as a means of facilitating dissemination of research-based knowledge.

As part of this mission, ISA has undertaken a project to develop and make available via the internet, free educational resources.

The following free resources are available:

Portal to Research is designed to provide easy access to a wealth of published research available through the internet. Back issues of the Journal of Arboriculture and Arboriculture & Urban Forestry can also be accessed through this online tool including additional online searching tips for researchers, information about how to conduct a literature search, and instruction and advice in understanding research protocols, refereed publications, and statistical analyses.

Tree Ordinance Guidelines is an excellent resource for citizens and local governments interested in developing, revising, or evaluating local tree ordinances. Rather than using a 'model ordinance' approach, the site describes how tree ordinance development can be integrated with an overall community tree management program. The site includes annotated examples of effective tree ordinance provisions used throughout the country including detailed descriptions of practical methods used to monitor community tree resources, tree management activities, and community attitudes.

Multi-lingual Dictionary was created in partnership with the European Arboricultural Council and provides access to a wealth of arboricultural terms in different languages through an online database system. This database is constantly expanding and updated with new arboricultural terms and definitions in various languages.

Speakers’ Bureau is a database designed to provide access to a wide range of speakers in the field of arboriculture. Speakers in this database cover a full array of topics including pruning, tree risk assessment, climbing and rigging, and tree biomechanics. ISA members, certified professionals, board members, chapter executives and the public at large can have access to this online tool.

Those looking to get into the industry might be wondering where to start. Those already in the industry might be asking, 'Where do I go next? What are my career options?' Careers in Arboriculture is designed to answer these questions and more. This resource provides anyone with an interest in arboriculture with multiple career path options and a listing of possible careers. This resource also provides an awareness of the field, a practical career outlook, and information about education and/or experience requirements for different career path options.

CAD Planting Specifications provides easy access to a listing of CAD product categories including information about standards and practices in the arboriculture profession.

The Lightning Symposium took place March 7-8, 2007, in Plantation (Fort Lauderdale), Florida, USA. Researchers from around the world gathered to discuss lightning research and the latest lightning protection practices being used today in the arboriculture profession.
