Forester/Chainsaw Operator

Forester/Chainsaw Operator
GEI Consultants is seeking a Forester/Experienced Chainsaw Operator to fell standing trees, buck fallen trees, and operate winches to move the felled trees from a wide range of sites and site conditions. Candidate must be positive, flexible, and team-oriented with the willingness and desire to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Projects will involve field labor, technical work, report preparation, and/or supervision of field crews.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Working safely and helping to maintain a safe work environment
- Hiking into remote sites with equipment
- Assessing site, terrain, and weather conditions before felling, bucking, and moving trees
- Evaluating trees for certain characteristics such as twist, tension, or rot, and gauging amount and direction of lean.
- Using knowledge of tree characteristics and cutting techniques to control the direction of a tree's fall with the least environmental impact
- Working as member of a team rotating between chainsaw operation and winch operation
- Securing steel cables or chains to logs for dragging or pulling by winch
- Working in and around water (wetlands, streams, rivers)
- Operating small boats
- Driving a truck with a trailer
- Maintaining and repairing chainsaws and other equipment; cleaning, oiling, and greasing equipment; and sharpening equipment properly
- Performing other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 years experience operating chainsaws in a safe manner
- Must understand proper techniques in felling and bucking trees
- Certifications in tree removal
- Must be in good physical condition as he/she will be required to perform cutting duties under challenging conditions such as inclement weather/climate, steep slopes, changing project conditions, or heavy safety gear
- Must be able to take direction from others and be a team player
- Ability to respectfully communicate with and listen to the client’s/public’s input
- Ability to travel overnight and work out of town
- Ability to effectively communicate
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Life Sciences (Ecology, Environmental Science, Botany, Biology, Fisheries, Forestry) or equivalent experience
- Experience with native habitat restoration in Michigan or the Midwest
- Knowledge of or background in natural resources and ecology
- Wilderness first aid training, CPR, and Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License are preferred
- Experience leading field teams in various types of habitat restoration projects including invasive species control, stream and shoreline stabilization, sediment and erosion control BMP installation, planting, and seeding
- Experience talking with landowners and hunters
- CDL a plus
