Guide for Plant Appraisal, 9th Edition, is the professional plant appraiser’s how-to manual for determining size, species, condition, and location factors that influence the value of plants. Not only is it an invaluable source for establishing the valuation of plant casualties, but the guide is also a reference for real estate transactions, insurance purposes, plant condemnation actions, and tree inventories. I am finding that the worksheet formula (results) for determining the condition of a tree using the Guide for Judging the Condition of Landscape Trees artificially scores all trees higher than they should be, especially when some part of the tree actually has a huge problem, such as significant rot on the trunk. The "1" ranking for "sound bark and wood" is swamped by all the other variables (38 in all). For example, a Quercus agrifolia with serious trunk problems, as well as rot in some scaffold branches, still rated as 75% of maximum when it should probably be rated at 50% or lower. Otherwise, I really like this sort of approach; however, it needs some serious work. Of course, the results are also used to come up with a dollar value on the tree, again, it will result is trees valuing higher then they probably should.
