The World of Arboriculture -- United
Like the rest of the world, the members and staff of ISA were
affected by the terrible events of September 11. Following the terrorist
attack, ISA received an outpouring of messages from our members and associates
around the world. We’d like to share some of those messages with you.
“Please pass on to the American members of the ISA the thoughts of
the European and UK/I chapter liaison officers who are here in the U.K.
My thoughts are with those of the American people. Having been up to the
WTC, flown in America, and met so many people, I, along with many others
here, watch the events in disbelief. I hope no ISA members or their families
have been caught up in these events.
“My sympathy goes to those who wait for news of family members
and those who have experienced a loss already. Take care.”
Dave Dowson, Leicestershire, U.K.
“. . . I love you all for you are such lovely representatives of such a
fine nation. I want you all to know that this is not just me saying this,
but it is a reaction from the U.K. as a nation. . . .
“With the current inexplicable, horrendous, and totally unacceptable
. . . actions of those unfit to be called humans, we are all Americans
now. You are our people and I guess if I was a young, fit man, I would
have thoughts of volunteerism to fight for the civilized world.
“Currently, on a personal note, I feel helpless and terribly
separated by distance. . . .”
Colin Bashford, Hampshire, U.K.
“Please accept our deepest sympathy and heartfelt thoughts to you and all
our friends at the ISA head office.
“We can only start to think what a tragedy like this must mean
to you when it has affected all of us ‘up here’ so much. You know that
tree people are a strong and closely knit community, and if there is anything
that we can do, please call. We sincerely hope that everyone comes through
okay.”
The Board and Membership, ISA Ontario Chapter
“I can’t express how much we are thinking of you at this hard time. Even
though your country is on the other side of the ocean, we feel the suffering
with the people affected by the terrible terrorist attack. This is a very
serious test of the democracy and human values to which we ascribe and
which we must protect by any way. We are with your nation, and we pray
for the people who were affected by the terrible disaster in any way. Czech
people follow any kind of news from your country in this time, and we watch
TV every day. Today it was very hard to get newspapers, and everybody resolutely
deplores the nightmarish deed and all the people who did it.
“We are with you in our thoughts. We are with Americans. We are
with our friends.”
Pavel Wagner, Czech Republic
“The whole of the ISA here in the United Kingdom cannot find words to express
our feelings, but if we could it would pale into insignificance to what
the American people must be feeling—even more, the family and friends of
the people who perished in the tragic, barbaric, cowardly act.”
Jean McDermott, UK/I Chapter
“As a member-at-large of ISA, I feel united in the grief of all Americans.
Accept my sympathy extended to all our fellow members of ISA. I pray for
the souls of the departed and the prompt recovery of the wounded and distressed.”
Peter Laharrague, Argentina
“Deepest sympathy to all American people. This mindless act of terrorism
has left us all numb.”
Andy McClure, on behalf of the arborists and staff at
the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, U.K.
