The joint ISAUSDA Forest Service North American Tree Failure Database working group met in Sacramento, California, January 28 and 29, 2003, to finalize plans for the development of a database for recording information on tree failures. The group was organized by John Pronos of the Forest Service and included Larry Costello and Katherine Jones of the California Tree Failure Reporting program; Jim Clark representing ISA; and Tom Smiley of the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories. From the Forest Service were Mary Lou Fairweather, John Schwandt, Judy Adams, Joe O’Brien, Jim Worrall, Diane Hildebrand and Bill Jones. Plans were developed to determine which data to collect, to establish an Internet-based system of data submission, to provide training materials, and to determine how the program should be brought to the attention of ISA members. Initial testing of the system should begin in August 2003, and the final system should be available August 2004. It is anticipated that data will be collected on 3,000 or more trees per year, which will greatly expand our knowledge of the causes of tree failures and how to predict them.
