I have a site with a fairly large giant redwood that has an odd swollen trunk that does not seem to have an easy explaination. The trunk diameter is approximatly 2.6 m. however this large size only extend about 6 - 7 metres up the trunk and then the tree quickly tapers down in size. Tree health is normal and I cannot visually pick up any reason why the tree would have such an odd form, there are lots of Redwoods in the lower mainland of BC and I have never seens this shape before. Any ideas?
I can forward pictures.

It sounds like you are observing a burl. This is contorted growth, similar to crown gall, but located in the tree, speculated to be caused by stress, insect, or pathogen infection. Burl wood is highly prized by woodworkers.
