    SMA’s EAB Position Paper and Toolbox: Why Confidence, Competence, and Camaraderie Matters

    Summary

    In 2011, the Society of Municipal Arborists created an EAB Position Paper that promotes ash canopy conservation as an ecologically and economically sound management option. Dr. Deb McCullough, Michigan State University, reviews the supporting research. Dr. Krista Ryall, Canadian Forest Service, reviews the Branch Sampling Method that detects EAB at low populations. Joe Meating, President, BioForest Technologies, focuses on Ash Tree Treatment to meet objectives through a Strategic EAB Management/Work Plan. John McNeil, Town of Oakville, Past President of SMA, summarizes how all the tools in “SMA’s EAB Toolbox” have been applied.

    Presenters

    John McNeil, RPF, is the Manager of Forestry for the Town of Oakville, Ontario. He is currently serving as Past President of the SMA.

    Dr. Deb McCullough is a Professor in the Department of Entomology, Department of Forestry at Michigan State University. She is currently serving on the SMA’s ad hoc EAB Science Advisory Committee.

    Dr. Krista Ryall is a Forest Ecological Entomologist with the Canadian Forest Service at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

    Joe Meating is President of BioForest Technologies Inc. located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
