Presentation Description
Title: MOONLIGHTING AT MONTICELLO
Summary: Every tree removal presents its own challenges. When an enormous hollow tree towers over one of the most historically significant structures in America, the challenge grows exponentially more complex as the margin for error disappears completely. The life of this beloved tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello is traced from its establishment in the landscape circa 1861 to its removal in June 2008. Succumbing to phytophora, it was removed at night during one of the most complicated and unique removal operations in the history of arboriculture. Spectacular photography, historical research, and captivating story-telling offer something for everyone.
